Quebec residents are grappling with an unusually high number of mosquitoes this summer, a direct consequence of the heavy rainfall and elevated temperatures that have defined the season. The combination of intense storms and persistent heat has created ideal conditions for mosquito proliferation, according to experts.
Étienne Normandin-Leclerc, an entomologist and collections coordinator at the Université de Montréal’s Institut de recherche en biologie végétale, highlights that while official mosquito data for summer 2024 is still pending, the observed increase in mosquito activity aligns with the summer’s extreme weather patterns. “Through general observations, it’s clear there are more mosquitoes this year,” Normandin-Leclerc noted. “Heavy rains lead to stagnant water in various environments, from forests to urban areas, providing perfect breeding grounds for mosquitoes.”
Christopher Buddle, an entomologist at McGill University, agrees that the weather has been particularly favorable for mosquitoes this summer. “The rain has created excellent conditions for mosquito larvae, which thrive in standing water,” Buddle explained. He also points out that the late summer typically sees a rise in mosquito and wasp activity due to natural seasonal patterns. “Every year, we notice a spike in certain mosquito species and wasps as their populations grow later in the season,” he added.
Despite the anecdotal evidence of increased mosquito numbers, accurately quantifying the exact population is challenging. Government agencies and research institutes use traps equipped with fans, lights, heat, and synthetic carbon dioxide to attract and count mosquitoes for analysis. However, as Buddle notes, determining the exact increase from one year to the next is complex.
The health risks associated with mosquitoes are significant, including the potential transmission of viruses such as West Nile virus, California serogroup viruses (CSV), and Eastern equine encephalitis (EEE). To mitigate mosquito attraction, Normandin-Leclerc recommends using insect repellents containing DEET, wearing light-colored clothing, and taking precautions such as showering before outdoor activities. Natural repellents like citronella and lavender oil can also offer some protection, though their effectiveness is limited.
The increase in wasp activity in the Montreal region is another concern. Normandin-Leclerc attributes this to climate change, which has led to higher average temperatures and subsequently more wasp nests. “Warmer temperatures boost wasp metabolism and increase their food demands, making them more aggressive in seeking out sugary and protein-rich foods,” he explained.
Both researchers advise caution when dealing with wasps. While stings are generally not harmful unless allergic reactions occur, it’s best to avoid swatting at them, particularly near their nests.
