The unexpected termination of the NDP’s supply and confidence agreement with the Trudeau Liberals has sent ripples through Canadian politics. NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh’s decision to end the deal was kept under wraps until he announced it via a video posted on Wednesday afternoon. This announcement raised the possibility of an early election and caught the Liberals off guard.
Singh’s video came as a shock to the Liberals, who were only informed of the split via a generic email sent by the NDP shortly before Singh’s public disclosure. At the time, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was in Newfoundland announcing a new school lunch program, unaware that his staff would soon have to address the fallout from the NDP’s decision.
The NDP’s decision to sever ties with the Liberals was not abrupt. From the outset of the agreement in March 2022, Singh and the NDP had maintained that they could exit the deal at any time. Discussions about ending the agreement had been ongoing since last fall’s party convention and intensified this past January when negotiations over pharmacare stalled. The NDP had signaled their intention to withdraw if no progress was made, even suspending their support in the House of Commons to prevent the Liberals from advancing legislation.
By June, discussions about leaving the deal had resumed among NDP MPs, and Singh’s team was instructed to prepare an exit strategy. Singh recorded his video announcement early last week, just before Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre publicly criticized him as a “sellout” and urged him to end the deal.
Poilievre has since indicated he will introduce non-confidence motions when Parliament reconvenes, forcing the NDP to take a stand. However, NDP sources say they will evaluate each vote individually and are determined not to be pushed into an election by Poilievre’s provocations.
The Liberals, caught off guard by the timing of the announcement, have reported that a fundraising email sent after Singh’s declaration generated record contributions. They aim to extend their minority government until next fall, hoping that economic conditions and popular programs like dental care and pharmacare will strengthen their position.
As the political landscape shifts, the NDP is positioning itself as the clear alternative to the Conservatives, motivated by frustration with the slow pace of the Liberals’ implementation of their agreement. Despite the end of the deal, the NDP remains committed to scrutinizing the Liberals’ actions and pushing for swift progress on promised reforms.
