Two tropical systems are drawing attention across the Atlantic and Pacific, with Tropical Storm Fay forming far from land while Tropical Storm Odalys is expected to strengthen further over the eastern Pacific.
Fay developed in the northern Atlantic Ocean southwest of the Azores, roughly 450 miles away from the island group. The National Hurricane Center said the storm poses no immediate threat to land, with no coastal watches or warnings in effect.
Fay had maximum sustained winds of about 45 mph and was moving north-northeast at roughly 5 mph. Forecasters expect the system to weaken and dissipate later in the week after a period of limited strengthening over the open Atlantic.
Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Odalys is developing southwest of Mexico’s west coast. The storm was located about 1,245 miles southwest of the southern tip of Baja California, with sustained winds of 40 mph and movement toward the northwest.
Forecasters expect Odalys to strengthen and potentially reach hurricane status, with conditions in the eastern Pacific currently more favorable for development than those affecting Fay in the Atlantic.
The formation of Fay comes during an unusually quiet Atlantic hurricane season. Weather forecasters have noted that the Atlantic had experienced an exceptionally slow start, with the region recording no hurricanes for an unusually long period.
Despite the development of the two storms, neither system was posing an immediate threat to populated land areas at the time of the latest reports.
Meteorologists continue to monitor both systems because tropical storms can change strength and direction as atmospheric and ocean conditions evolve. Residents in potentially affected areas are encouraged to follow updates from official weather authorities and emergency agencies.
For now, Fay remains a primarily open-ocean system in the Atlantic, while Odalys is the system attracting greater attention because of its potential to strengthen into a hurricane.
