Diverse Candidates Could Boost Voter Turnout in Brandon’s 2026 Municipal Election

The growing diversity of candidates contesting Brandon’s municipal election could encourage more residents to participate in the democratic process, as the Manitoba city seeks to reverse years of declining voter turnout.

With the election scheduled for October 28, 2026, voters will choose a mayor, councillors for the city’s 10 wards and school board trustees. The wide range of candidates and backgrounds represented in this year’s race has raised hopes that more residents will become interested in local politics.

However, the election comes against a backdrop of low participation. According to reported municipal election figures, turnout fell to approximately 16.9 per cent in 2018 before rising slightly to 17.9 per cent in 2022. These figures remain significantly below the 42 per cent recorded in 2014.

Diverse Candidates Bring Different Perspectives

Brandon’s 2026 municipal election features candidates with varied personal, professional and cultural backgrounds, potentially giving residents more opportunities to identify with those seeking public office.

The official candidate list includes Buchi Onuke and Sonikile Tembo in Ward 2, Enver Naidoo in Ward 3, and Dhara Patel and Ketan Patel among the candidates contesting Ward 8. Their participation reflects the range of individuals seeking to represent residents across the city.

A more representative field of candidates can help bring different community experiences and priorities into discussions about municipal services, public safety, housing, infrastructure and economic development.

For residents who have previously felt disconnected from local politics, seeing candidates from different backgrounds could also make the election more relatable.

Nevertheless, greater diversity alone does not guarantee higher turnout. Candidates must communicate their plans effectively, while voters need accessible information about their positions and the issues they intend to address.

Low Voter Turnout Remains a Concern

Brandon has struggled to attract large numbers of voters in recent municipal elections, raising concerns about public engagement and participation in local decision-making.

Brandon University political science professor Kelly Saunders has highlighted the challenges of encouraging residents to remain engaged with politics amid rising living costs, frustration with political institutions and competing daily responsibilities.

Students and other residents have also expressed concerns about the difficulty of finding information about candidates and understanding their positions on issues affecting the community.

These challenges make public debates, community meetings and accessible campaign information particularly important during the election period.

Election Could Renew Interest in Local Issues

The competitive mayoral race between incumbent Jeff Fawcett and former Brandon East MLA Len Isleifson is another factor that could attract attention to the election.

More than two dozen candidates are contesting council positions, while the election also gives residents an opportunity to influence decisions affecting schools and other municipal priorities.

Advance voting opportunities are scheduled for October 14 at City Hall, October 17 at the Keystone Centre and October 22 at City Hall. The city has also announced mobile voting arrangements for eligible residents at selected locations.

As Brandon prepares for election day, the challenge will be turning increased interest in its diverse candidates into meaningful participation at the ballot box.

Ultimately, residents will determine whether this year’s election marks a turning point in civic engagement and strengthens public involvement in shaping Brandon’s future.
