France has praised Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney for his measured but firm response to what it describes as “extremely radical” demands from the United States, as Ottawa faces ongoing trade tensions with President Donald Trump’s administration.
French Ambassador to Canada Hélène Farnaud-Defromont said France admired Carney’s handling of negotiations with Washington and viewed his approach as an example of how countries can defend their interests while maintaining a calm diplomatic stance.
In an interview with The Canadian Press published on Sunday, October 11, 2026, the ambassador said France wants to strengthen its relationship with Canada and make it one of its closest European allies across several strategic sectors.
France Supports Canada’s Firm Approach to U.S. Trade Talks
Carney suspended trade negotiations with the United States in August after accusing the Trump administration of introducing new demands late in the process. His government has also stressed the importance of protecting Canada’s sovereignty, including its ability to regulate major technology companies and preserve its linguistic identity.
Farnaud-Defromont described Canada’s response as both calm and determined, saying it had earned admiration in France and elsewhere in Europe.
Her comments come amid uncertainty over the future of Canada-U.S. economic relations, particularly as disagreements continue over tariffs, trade conditions and regulatory policies.
The European Union, which manages most of France’s trade negotiations with Washington, has also faced pressure from the Trump administration. French President Emmanuel Macron previously criticised a trade arrangement under which the United States imposed a 15 per cent tariff on many European goods.
Canada and France Seek Stronger Strategic Partnership
The French ambassador said Canada and France already share strong relations built on common values, human rights, cultural connections and longstanding business ties.
However, she argued that both countries could achieve more by expanding cooperation in sectors considered essential to their economic and security interests.
Potential areas of collaboration include aerospace, defence, energy, quantum technology and artificial intelligence.
France is also interested in strengthening economic cooperation with Canada as both countries navigate global instability, including Russia’s war against Ukraine, economic uncertainty and political polarisation.
Farnaud-Defromont described Canada as an important and preferred partner, emphasising France’s desire to remain a reliable ally during a period of international uncertainty.
Canada and European Union Consider Closer Ties
The comments come ahead of a planned Canada-European Union summit later this month, where officials are expected to discuss deeper economic and strategic cooperation.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has floated the idea of a closer relationship between Canada and the EU, including a possible associate status. Carney has instead referred to a proposed “alliance of the future.”
Farnaud-Defromont said the focus should be on practical results rather than terminology, urging both sides to move quickly towards concrete agreements.
Carney’s recent address to the European Parliament in Strasbourg also resonated with French audiences, according to the ambassador. The speech highlighted opportunities for Canada and Europe to work together while developing new international partnerships.
As trade tensions with Washington continue, France’s position signals growing European interest in closer ties with Canada.
