First Images Released of Pope Leo XIV Celebrating Mass in Hospital After Cancer Surgery

ROME, Italy — The Vatican has released the first images of Pope Leo XIV since he underwent surgery for lung cancer, showing the 71-year-old pontiff celebrating Mass at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital as doctors report continued improvement in his recovery.

The photographs, released on Friday, October 16, show Pope Leo standing at an altar in a makeshift chapel inside the hospital, wearing green liturgical vestments. Despite his recent operation, the pontiff was able to preside over the Mass, distribute Communion to medical staff and Vatican security personnel, and deliver a homily.

According to Vatican spokesperson Matteo Bruni, Pope Leo expressed gratitude to hospital workers for their dedication to caring for patients, particularly those experiencing illness and physical vulnerability.

The Mass offered a glimpse of the pope’s activities during his hospitalization and reassured Catholics worldwide who have been following updates on his health.

A medical statement confirmed that his postoperative recovery continues to improve. Doctors said he can now carry out his normal daily activities independently, although further medical assessments are needed to determine whether additional treatment will be necessary.

Surgery Confirmed Lung Cancer Diagnosis

Pope Leo underwent surgery on October 13, during which doctors removed the lower lobe of his right lung after identifying a suspicious nodule.

Examinations confirmed that the growth was lung adenocarcinoma, the most common type of lung cancer. However, medical specialists are still awaiting additional test results to determine the precise characteristics of the cancer, whether it has spread beyond the removed lung tissue and whether further treatment is required.

The Vatican has not announced an exact date for his discharge from hospital.

Sunday Appearance and Upcoming Trip

The Vatican has confirmed that Pope Leo plans to make his first public appearance since the surgery on Sunday, October 18, when he is expected to deliver the traditional Angelus prayer.

Preparations are also continuing for his planned November 6–17 visit to Uruguay, Argentina and Peru. Although questions remain about whether his health will affect the journey, the Vatican has continued making arrangements for the trip.

Meanwhile, messages of encouragement have reached the pope from well-wishers, including young patients receiving cancer treatment at Gemelli Hospital.

As recovery progresses, Catholics and observers around the world will continue watching for updates on his health and his ability to resume regular papal duties.
