Russia has launched fresh attacks across nine Ukrainian regions, causing emergency power outages, damaging homes and injuring at least 15 people, as tensions between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and U.S. President Donald Trump continue to deepen.
The attacks, reported on Friday, October 16, 2026, left hundreds of thousands of households without electricity as Ukraine prepares for another difficult winter. Ukrainian officials said the strikes damaged civilian infrastructure, raising concerns about the impact on residents who depend on electricity and heating during the colder months.
Russian Attacks Raise Fears Over Ukraine’s Energy Supply
Russia has repeatedly targeted Ukraine’s energy infrastructure during the war, disrupting electricity supplies and threatening access to heating and water. Ukrainian authorities have warned that Moscow is preparing for further attacks as temperatures begin to fall.
The latest strikes come amid growing concerns over civilian casualties. According to the United Nations human rights monitoring mission in Ukraine, at least 328 civilians were killed and 2,105 injured in September, representing an 85 per cent increase in casualties compared with September last year.
Ukraine has responded with long-range drone attacks against Russian targets, including oil refineries and military infrastructure. The attacks have also caused disruptions to Russian aviation, with hundreds of flights delayed or cancelled following overnight drone activity.
Zelenskyy and Trump Clash Over Ceasefire
Relations between Zelenskyy and Trump have deteriorated following disagreements over a proposed ceasefire covering energy infrastructure.
Trump announced an energy truce earlier in the week, but Ukraine said Russia continued striking its energy facilities. Kyiv subsequently resumed attacks on Russian oil infrastructure, arguing that Moscow had failed to respect the proposed arrangement. The two countries have not confirmed a mutually agreed ceasefire.
Zelenskyy has also expressed frustration over Washington’s approach to Moscow, including a controversial Russian diesel deal and concerns about access to military communications and intelligence. Trump, meanwhile, has criticised Ukraine’s attacks on Russian refineries, arguing that they contribute to rising energy prices.
European Leaders Reaffirm Support for Ukraine
As tensions with Washington grow, Zelenskyy is seeking stronger backing from European allies. At a summit in Brussels on Friday, European leaders reaffirmed their commitment to supporting Ukraine and called for continued U.S. involvement in efforts to end the war.
With winter approaching and attacks continuing, Ukraine faces mounting pressure to protect civilians, maintain essential services and secure the military assistance needed to defend its territory.
