A 37-year-old British man has pleaded guilty to a negligence charge over the death of his 3-year-old son, who fell from a fourth-floor hotel window during a family holiday in Cyprus.
The father entered the guilty plea before the Paphos District Court on Tuesday, admitting to causing death through a rash or negligent act. The circumstances surrounding the child’s fall have not been fully disclosed.
The incident occurred in July at a hotel in Chlorakas, near Paphos, shortly after the family arrived in Cyprus for a vacation. The child died after falling from the hotel’s fourth-floor window.
The defendant, whose name has not been publicly released, was previously arrested and charged following the incident. He was later released under conditions that included surrendering his passport, reporting regularly to police and posting a €20,000 bond.
His lawyer, Alexandros Alexandrou, said the decision to plead guilty was made partly to avoid a lengthy court case that could require the family to repeatedly revisit the circumstances surrounding the child’s death. The lawyer described the fall as an accident and said his client’s priority was to return to his family.
The court is scheduled to hear the facts of the case and proceed with mitigation and sentencing on October 5. The charge carries a maximum prison sentence of four years, while a fine is also possible.
The case had previously attracted attention after Cyprus’ attorney general rejected a request to dismiss the proceedings on humanitarian grounds. Prosecutors argued that the case should continue in the public interest despite the father’s grief.
The court had earlier allowed the man to return to the United Kingdom to attend his son’s funeral, with travel restrictions temporarily lifted. He was required to return to Cyprus to continue the legal proceedings.
The tragic case has highlighted the difficult balance between legal accountability and the circumstances surrounding an accidental death, while the court prepares to determine the appropriate sentence.
