Bank of Canada Set to Deliver Sixth Interest Rate Decision of 2026

The Bank of Canada is set to announce its sixth interest rate decision of 2026 as policymakers weigh stronger-than-expected economic growth against persistent inflation and uncertainty surrounding the country’s trade relationship with the United States.

The central bank is widely expected to keep its benchmark overnight rate at 2.25% in Wednesday’s announcement. The rate has remained at that level since late 2025 as the Bank has taken a cautious approach to monetary policy.

The decision comes after Canada’s economy recorded stronger-than-expected growth. According to recent data cited by Reuters, the economy expanded at an annualized rate of 3.3% in the second quarter, exceeding economists’ expectations. Growth was supported by exports, domestic demand, business investment and household spending.

However, policymakers face significant risks from the ongoing Canada-U.S. trade war. New U.S. tariffs on Canadian goods and Ottawa’s retaliatory measures have created uncertainty for businesses, consumers and investors.

Inflation is another key factor in the Bank’s decision. Higher gasoline prices have pushed headline inflation closer to the upper end of the Bank’s 1% to 3% target range, while underlying inflation remains closer to the central bank’s 2% objective.

The labor market has also shown resilience, with unemployment recently reported at 6.4%, giving policymakers some room to maintain the current interest rate while assessing whether economic strength will persist.

The Bank’s previous rate decision on July 15 kept the overnight rate at 2.25%, with the Bank Rate at 2.50% and the deposit rate at 2.20%.

Financial markets and economists are closely watching the September announcement for clues about the Bank’s next move. While stronger growth could create pressure for higher rates, uncertainty surrounding tariffs and the broader economic outlook may encourage policymakers to remain patient.

The Bank of Canada has scheduled seven interest-rate announcements for 2026, with the next decision after September set for October 28.

The latest decision will therefore be closely watched by homeowners, borrowers, businesses, investors and consumers as they assess the outlook for borrowing costs and the Canadian economy.
