PM Carney Meets Business Leaders as Canada-U.S. Trade War Intensifies

Prime Minister Mark Carney is meeting with Canadian business leaders as Ottawa works to navigate the escalating Canada-U.S. trade war and protect the country’s economy from the impact of tariffs and prolonged uncertainty.

The discussions come after recent trade negotiations between Canada and the United States broke down, with President Donald Trump’s administration imposing 50% tariffs on a range of Canadian goods. Canada has responded with retaliatory tariffs targeting billions of dollars worth of U.S. imports.

Carney’s government has been consulting businesses and industry groups as it assesses the economic consequences of the dispute. The prime minister has emphasized that Canada remains open to negotiations but will not accept terms that undermine the country’s economic interests or sovereignty.

The escalating dispute is creating uncertainty for companies operating across North American supply chains. Industries including automotive manufacturing, energy, steel, aluminum, agriculture and forestry have significant exposure to Canada-U.S. trade and could face higher costs or disruptions if tariffs remain in place.

Canada’s retaliatory measures are scheduled to take effect on September 8, giving businesses and governments a limited window in which further negotiations could potentially take place.

Carney has also been pushing for greater diversification of Canada’s international trade. Ottawa is seeking to expand commercial relationships with Europe and other markets as Canadian businesses look for ways to reduce their dependence on the United States.

The prime minister faces a delicate balancing act. While Canadians have broadly supported a firm response to Washington, economists have warned that a prolonged trade conflict could eventually weigh on investment, employment and consumer prices.

Business leaders are therefore watching the government’s strategy closely, particularly as companies make decisions about investment, sourcing and supply chains amid uncertainty over the future of Canada-U.S. economic relations.

The latest meeting underscores Ottawa’s effort to coordinate closely with the private sector as Canada prepares for what could become a prolonged period of trade tensions with its largest economic partner.
