Two U.S. Army soldiers were injured after a sudden encounter with a brown bear during a military training exercise in Anchorage, Alaska, officials confirmed.

The incident occurred at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, specifically in the mountainous Arctic Valley training area, where troops were conducting a land navigation exercise. According to military sources, both soldiers deployed pepper spray to deter the animal during the encounter.

Authorities have not disclosed the severity of the soldiers’ injuries, stating that details will remain limited until family members are formally notified. The injured personnel are currently receiving medical care.

A spokesperson for the United States Army 11th Airborne Division, Lt. Col. Jo Nederhoed, said the safety of military personnel remains the top priority and confirmed that the incident is under active investigation.

Military officials are also working closely with wildlife authorities to assess the situation and ensure safety measures are reinforced in the area, which is known for its significant bear population.

The base, located within the Municipality of Anchorage, spans roughly 100 square miles and is home to hundreds of bears, including both black bears and brown bears, making wildlife encounters an ongoing risk during field exercises.
