Thousands of people from Spain and around the world have descended on the small town of Buñol, near Valencia, for the annual La Tomatina festival, one of the world’s most famous food fights. The 2026 celebration takes place Wednesday, August 26, continuing a tradition that has transformed the quiet Spanish town into a sea of red.
The main event sees participants spend about an hour throwing ripe tomatoes at one another in the streets of Buñol. Organizers prepared around 150,000 kilograms of tomatoes for this year’s celebration, with roughly 22,000 people expected to take part.
Participants typically arrive wearing old clothes and protective goggles as the streets quickly become covered in tomato pulp and juice. A signal at midday marks the start of the chaotic food fight, which lasts for approximately one hour.
La Tomatina dates back to 1945, when what began as a spontaneous food fight during a local celebration eventually developed into an annual tradition. The festival was later banned during the 1950s but was eventually revived and grew into an internationally recognized event.
The festival has also become a major tourism attraction for Valencia and Spain. Around 40% of participants are estimated to come from outside Spain, reflecting the event’s growing international appeal.
Despite its chaotic appearance, La Tomatina is tightly organized. Access is controlled through tickets, while authorities deploy extensive security and emergency personnel to manage the large crowd. This year’s organizers have also introduced additional accessibility measures for people with specific needs.
Once the tomato battle ends, residents and emergency crews begin the extensive cleanup operation. Water is used to wash the streets and participants, quickly restoring Buñol after the unusual spectacle.
What started as a local prank more than eight decades ago has become one of Spain’s most recognizable cultural festivals, drawing visitors who are willing to trade clean clothes for an unforgettable hour covered in tomatoes.
