U.S. President Donald Trump has rejected an Iranian proposal to reopen the strategically important Strait of Hormuz and resume negotiations, dealing another setback to diplomatic efforts aimed at ending the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
Iran had proposed reopening the vital waterway within seven days and restarting talks on its nuclear program if the United States lifted its naval blockade of Iranian ports, eased oil sanctions and observed a ceasefire that would include Lebanon. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said the proposal was delivered to Washington through Qatari mediators.
Trump told reporters Saturday that he had rejected the proposal, saying the terms offered by Tehran were not acceptable. He also said Iran was seeking an agreement because of the economic pressure created by the disruption of shipping through the strait.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important energy routes. Before the conflict, roughly one-fifth to one-quarter of global oil and gas shipments passed through the waterway, making any prolonged disruption a major concern for international energy markets.
Iran’s proposal called for several steps to be completed over the course of a week, with the strait expected to reopen on the sixth day and formal U.S.-Iran nuclear discussions resuming on the seventh day. The proposal resembles an interim agreement reached in June, although that arrangement subsequently collapsed.
The latest diplomatic effort comes as the conflict has placed significant pressure on Iran’s economy and disrupted global energy markets. Higher energy prices have also created economic and political concerns in the United States.
The White House has said U.S. officials have held positive and constructive discussions through mediators, although Trump has maintained that Washington’s conditions for an agreement must be met.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has said Tehran remains open to diplomacy but would not accept negotiations conducted under what he described as coercive conditions. Iranian officials have continued to call for a diplomatic pathway to end the conflict while maintaining their position on the country’s nuclear program.
Trump’s rejection leaves the future of the Strait of Hormuz and the broader U.S.-Iran conflict uncertain, with further diplomatic efforts likely to depend on whether the two sides can bridge their differences over the blockade, sanctions, the nuclear program and regional hostilities.
