Google Maps has begun displaying “Lake America” instead of Lake Ontario for users in the United States, following President Donald Trump’s executive order renaming the Great Lake in U.S. federal geographic records.
Google said the change follows its longstanding policy of updating Maps to reflect official geographic names used by government authorities. The U.S. Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) formally changed the lake’s name in the United States after Trump’s August 27 executive order.
The change is location-specific. Users in the United States will see “Lake America,” while users in Canada will continue to see “Lake Ontario.” People accessing Google Maps from countries outside the two nations will see both names.
Lake Ontario is one of North America’s five Great Lakes and forms part of the international border between the United States and Canada. The lake’s northern shoreline includes major Canadian communities, including Toronto, while New York State lies along its southern shore.
The Google Maps update adds a technological dimension to an increasingly contentious Canada-U.S. dispute. Trump’s renaming decision came shortly after trade negotiations between Washington and Ottawa broke down and Canada announced retaliatory tariffs.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has rejected the change, saying Canadians will continue to recognize the body of water by its traditional name, Lake Ontario. Ontario Premier Doug Ford has also criticized the U.S. renaming and reaffirmed the province’s use of the original name.
The controversy also raises questions about how geographic names are handled when a body of water is shared by two countries. While the United States can determine the names used in its own federal databases and official documents, the change does not require Canada to adopt the same designation.
Google’s decision mirrors its handling of the earlier U.S. renaming of the Gulf of Mexico as the “Gulf of America.” The company has said its Maps platform uses official government naming sources while taking geographic differences between countries into account.
For now, the lake effectively has different labels depending on where a Google Maps user is located: Lake America in the United States, Lake Ontario in Canada, and both names in other parts of the world.
The development is likely to keep the unusual naming dispute in the spotlight as broader tensions over tariffs, trade and Canada-U.S. relations continue.
