Lonnie Bunch to Retire From Smithsonian Leadership After Tensions With Trump Administration

Lonnie Bunch III, secretary of the Smithsonian Institution and the organization’s first Black leader, has announced that he will retire at the end of 2026 after nearly eight years in the position and 38 years of service to the Smithsonian.

Bunch’s departure comes during a period of growing tension between the Smithsonian and the administration of President Donald Trump, which has criticized the institution’s approach to presenting American history and demanded changes to some museum exhibits and programs.

The Trump administration has accused Smithsonian leaders of promoting what it describes as divisive or anti-American narratives. A White House report released earlier this year specifically criticized the institution’s portrayal of issues including slavery, race and other difficult chapters of U.S. history.

Bunch has defended the Smithsonian’s commitment to historical accuracy, scholarship and presenting the complexities of American history. While he acknowledged that his role had become stressful, he said his decision to retire was not directly caused by the administration’s pressure and described it as the right time to begin a new chapter.

During his tenure, Bunch oversaw one of the most important periods in the Smithsonian’s history. He previously helped create the National Museum of African American History and Culture, which opened in 2016, before becoming Smithsonian secretary in 2019.

The Smithsonian operates a vast network of museums, research centers and the National Zoo. Bunch’s departure will therefore trigger a major leadership transition at a politically sensitive time for the institution.

The Trump administration has increased scrutiny of the Smithsonian during its second term, including reviews of museum content and threats involving federal support. The Interior Department recently warned that federal agencies could limit their support for the institution, including artifact loans, procurement assistance and discretionary grants.

Despite the political pressure, Bunch has maintained that the Smithsonian must remain committed to independent scholarship and a comprehensive presentation of U.S. history.

His retirement is expected to intensify debate over the future direction of the Smithsonian and the balance between historical scholarship, political oversight and institutional independence.

The Smithsonian’s Board of Regents will oversee the search for Bunch’s successor as the institution prepares for a leadership change at a crucial moment in its history.
