Kenya Bus Crash Kills 22 on Nairobi-Mombasa Highway Near Previous Accident Site

At least 22 people have died and several others have been injured after a passenger bus collided with a truck along Kenya’s main Nairobi-Mombasa highway on Sunday, October 25, 2026. The fatal crash occurred near Mtito Andei in Makueni County, close to the location of another deadly accident that claimed 17 lives just three weeks earlier.

According to Kenyan authorities, the latest collision happened in the morning as passengers were traveling toward the coastal city of Mombasa after attending their church pastor’s funeral in western Kenya. The incident has renewed concerns about road safety along one of the country’s busiest transport routes.

The bus collided with a truck in the Kanga area near Mtito Andei, resulting in multiple fatalities and injuries. Makueni County Commissioner Abdullahi Khalif confirmed the deaths and warned that the toll could increase as authorities continued assessing the situation.

Medical Superintendent Paul Kisienya of Mtito Andei Hospital said injured passengers were receiving treatment. Reports from Kenyan media indicated that survivors were taken to hospitals in Mtito Andei and Makindu for medical attention.

The passengers had been returning from a funeral when the crash occurred. Survivors described scenes of confusion and distress following the collision, as injured passengers and other motorists attempted to respond to the emergency.

Conflicting Accounts of How the Accident Happened

Authorities have not yet established the complete circumstances surrounding the collision.

Preliminary reports from Kenya’s National Transport and Safety Authority initially raised the possibility of improper overtaking. Later reports from county officials indicated that the bus driver may have attempted to overtake several vehicles before colliding head-on with the oncoming truck.

However, investigators will need to establish the precise sequence of events before determining responsibility for the crash.

Speeding, dangerous overtaking and poor road conditions have previously been identified as contributing factors in serious road accidents across Kenya. Officials are expected to examine the circumstances of the latest collision as part of their investigation.

Crash Occurs Near Previous Fatal Accident Site

The tragedy has intensified concerns about safety along the Nairobi-Mombasa highway, which connects Kenya’s capital with its major coastal city and serves as a key route for passenger and commercial transportation.

The latest crash occurred approximately three weeks after another accident on the same highway killed 17 people.

Kenya’s National Transport and Safety Authority has identified the stretch of road as an accident black spot, indicating a history of serious collisions. The authority has also said recommendations have been made to address safety concerns along the route.

Calls for Stronger Road Safety Measures

The repeated fatal accidents have renewed attention on the need to improve road safety enforcement, particularly regarding overtaking practices, speeding and driver conduct.

Road safety officials have repeatedly warned that reckless driving can have devastating consequences for passengers, motorists and other road users.

As investigations continue, authorities will need to determine what caused Sunday’s collision and whether additional safety measures are necessary to reduce the risk of similar tragedies.

For the families affected, the immediate concern remains the loss of loved ones and the recovery of those receiving medical treatment.
