Kenya Building Collapse: Rescuers Pull Survivors From Nairobi Rubble as Search for Missing Continues

Rescue teams in Nairobi, Kenya, are continuing their search for missing people after a multistorey building under construction collapsed in the Eastleigh neighborhood, leaving several people feared trapped beneath the rubble.

The collapse occurred on Friday, October 23, 2026, along a busy commercial street in Eastleigh, an area known for its large population of traders, residents and businesses. Emergency responders have been working around the clock to locate survivors amid concerns about the number of people who may have been inside or near the building when it fell.

On Saturday, October 24, rescue workers successfully pulled a man from the debris more than 24 hours after the collapse. He was transported to Kenyatta National Hospital for medical treatment.

The rescue provided a measure of hope for families waiting for news of relatives who may have been trapped beneath the collapsed structure.

According to the Kenya Red Cross, rescue operations involved multiple emergency response teams working to locate people and establish how many remained unaccounted for.

Rescuers deployed sniffer dogs and thermal sensors to detect possible survivors beneath the concrete and debris. Heavy machinery was also used to help clear the site while teams searched for signs of life.

Number of Missing People Remains Unclear

Authorities and humanitarian organizations have reported different figures as efforts continue to establish the whereabouts of people who may have been affected.

Kenya’s Interior Minister, Kipchumba Murkomen, initially reported that seven people were missing following the incident. However, Kenya Red Cross disaster officer Vincent Ochieng said the organization had recorded 31 missing-person reports, which were still being verified.

Officials explained that some workers might have left the construction site before the building collapsed, making it difficult to determine the exact number of people who were present at the time.

The verification process is intended to identify those who remain missing and prevent people who are safe from being incorrectly listed among those unaccounted for.

Building Collapse Raises Safety Concerns

The collapse has renewed concerns about construction standards and the enforcement of building regulations in Nairobi.

The building, which reportedly had more than 10 floors under construction, stood along a busy commercial street. Businesses in nearby buildings remained closed as owners assessed the disruption and potential losses caused by the incident.

Some business owners criticized local authorities, alleging that stronger enforcement of construction regulations could help prevent similar disasters.

Government spokesman Charles Owino said the building’s registered owner had died and that the owner’s family and another party were responsible for the property.

Authorities have not yet established the cause of the collapse. Investigations are expected to examine the construction process, compliance with building requirements and the circumstances surrounding the structural failure.

Search Operations Continue

Emergency responders remain at the scene as families await further information about their missing relatives.

The priority is to locate anyone who may still be trapped, provide medical assistance to survivors and establish an accurate account of the incident.

The collapse has also intensified calls for stronger oversight of construction projects and improved enforcement of building safety standards in Kenya’s rapidly developing urban areas.

As rescue operations continue, authorities face the urgent task of accounting for everyone who may have been affected while determining what caused the building to collapse.
