Arsenal Held to 1–1 Draw by Atlético Madrid After Controversial Late VAR Penalty Overturn in Champions League Semi-Final First Leg

Arsenal F.C. were left frustrated after a dramatic 1–1 draw away to Atlético Madrid in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final, with a late penalty overturned by VAR sparking controversy and anger from manager Mikel Arteta.

The match at the Metropolitano saw both sides score from the spot, with Viktor Gyökeres giving Arsenal the lead before Julián Álvarez equalised for Atlético in a tense and physical encounter filled with VAR interventions.

The major flashpoint came late in the second half when referee Danny Makkelie initially awarded Arsenal a third penalty after Eberechi Eze went down under a challenge from David Hancko. However, after a pitch-side VAR review, the decision was overturned, with officials ruling that the contact was insufficient.

Arteta described the reversal as “completely unacceptable,” arguing that the decision “changes the course of the tie” and insisting Arsenal had been denied a clear opportunity to win the match.

Atlético Madrid also had their own penalty awarded earlier in the game after a handball decision against Ben White was confirmed following VAR review, adding to the controversial officiating that defined the night.

Despite the frustration, Arsenal showed resilience in a hostile away atmosphere. The visitors controlled large portions of the first half but survived sustained pressure after the break, including chances for Antoine Griezmann, who struck the crossbar, and Ademola Lookman, who missed a clear opportunity.

Declan Rice was named Player of the Match for his midfield performance, while Gyökeres continued his strong scoring form, adding another goal to his impressive season tally.

Atlético will take encouragement from their second-half dominance, but Arsenal head into the second leg in London with the tie finely balanced and everything still to play for as they pursue a rare Champions League final appearance.
