Argentina’s opposition is struggling to overcome internal divisions and establish a clear leadership structure as President Javier Milei prepares to seek reelection in 2027.
The main opposition movement, Peronism, remains divided over its future direction, with former President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner continuing to wield significant influence despite being under house arrest and barred from holding public office. Her continued political prominence has complicated efforts by other Peronist figures to establish new leadership.
One of the leading figures seeking to shape the opposition’s future is Axel Kicillof, the governor of Buenos Aires province. Kicillof has called for a broader political alternative capable of attracting voters beyond traditional Peronist supporters.
However, the relationship between Kicillof and Fernández remains strained. Political disagreements between their respective factions have contributed to uncertainty over who should lead the movement into the 2027 presidential election.
Fernández’s supporters continue to campaign for her release and political return, despite her conviction and lifetime ban from public office. She has challenged her conviction before the U.N. Human Rights Committee, although a favorable decision from that body would not automatically restore her eligibility to run for office.
Meanwhile, Milei’s government has pursued an aggressive economic reform agenda centered on spending cuts, deregulation and reducing the size of government. The administration has brought annual inflation down significantly from its 2024 levels, but many Argentines continue to face pressure from lower purchasing power, higher utility costs and job losses.
The opposition sees those economic difficulties as an opportunity to rebuild support, with Kicillof and other Peronist leaders emphasizing public services, workers’ rights and social programs.
Earlier efforts to create a broad opposition alliance have also faced obstacles. Reuters reported in May that Peronist leaders were exploring a wider coalition that could include politicians from other parties opposed to Milei.
The challenge for Argentina’s opposition is now to reconcile competing leadership ambitions while developing a political platform capable of appealing to voters beyond its traditional base.
With the 2027 election still more than a year away, the opposition’s internal debate is likely to remain a major feature of Argentine politics as Milei seeks another term in office.
