WINNIPEG, Manitoba — Winnipeg firefighters responded to four separate structure fires within an eight-hour period overnight Friday into Saturday, keeping emergency crews busy across several parts of the city.
The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) attended incidents involving an apartment building, a shelter, a garage and a commercial property between Friday evening, October 30, and early Saturday morning, October 31, 2026.
No one was transported to hospital following the incidents. However, paramedics assessed one person at the first fire, while some residents were temporarily displaced. The causes of two of the fires remain under investigation.
First Fire Reported at Apartment Building on Powers Street
The first incident occurred at approximately 7:42 p.m. Friday, when WFPS crews were dispatched to an apartment building in the 100 block of Powers Street.
Because of the potential life-safety risks associated with a high-rise building, the emergency communications centre dispatched an additional crew to assist.
Firefighters arrived to find an active fire and worked to bring it under control. The blaze was declared under control at approximately 8:20 p.m.
Paramedics assessed one patient at the scene, but hospital transportation was not required.
Winnipeg Transit and the City of Winnipeg’s Emergency Social Services team also attended to provide temporary assistance to residents who were displaced by the incident.
Second Fire Breaks Out at Main Street Shelter
Later that night, at approximately 11:49 p.m., firefighters responded to another fire at a shelter in the 600 block of Main Street.
Crews discovered a fire inside the building and extinguished it using hose lines.
No injuries were reported in connection with the incident. Authorities have launched an investigation to determine what caused the fire.
The city did not provide an estimate of the damage resulting from the incident.
Garage Fire Reported on Burrows Avenue
The third emergency call came at approximately 1:27 a.m. Saturday, when firefighters were dispatched to a garage fire in the 500 block of Burrows Avenue.
Crews worked to contain the flames and declared the fire under control at 1:51 a.m.
No injuries were reported, and the incident was brought under control shortly after firefighters arrived.
Commercial Building Fire on Archibald Street
The fourth and final incident was reported at approximately 3:22 a.m. Saturday in the 0–100 block of Archibald Street.
When firefighters arrived, they found heavy smoke and flames coming from a commercial building.
Crews initially used a defensive exterior firefighting strategy before switching to an offensive approach when conditions allowed. The fire was declared under control at approximately 3:58 a.m.
No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, and the city said a damage estimate was not available.
Investigations Continue After Busy Night for Fire Crews
The four incidents required firefighters to respond to different types of buildings and emergencies across Winnipeg in less than eight hours.
While no hospital transportation was required in any of the incidents, the first fire resulted in temporary displacement support for apartment residents. Investigations are continuing into the Main Street shelter fire and the Archibald Street commercial building fire.
The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service has not announced any confirmed connection between the four incidents. They are being treated as separate fires.
The overnight response highlights the demands placed on emergency services as they work to contain fires, protect residents and limit damage to homes and commercial properties.
