African Union Commends Doha Dialogue Between DR Congo and Rwanda Leaders
In a significant diplomatic development, the African Union (AU) has lauded the recent talks held in Doha between President Félix Tshisekedi of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and President Paul Kagame of Rwanda. This meeting, facilitated by Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, marks the first direct dialogue between the two leaders since the escalation of conflicts involving the M23 rebels in eastern DRC.
AU’s Endorsement of the Doha Meeting
The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, H.E. Mahamoud Ali Youssouf, expressed strong support for the outcomes of the trilateral meeting held on March 18, 2025. He commended both President Tshisekedi and President Kagame for their dedication to dialogue and the peaceful resolution of the crisis in eastern DRC. Youssouf highlighted that their engagement demonstrates true leadership and a mutual understanding that peace, security, and stability are essential for the prosperity of their nations and the broader Great Lakes region.
Call for Immediate Ceasefire
During the Doha talks, both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to an immediate and unconditional ceasefire, aligning with agreements made during the East African Community (EAC) and Southern African Development Community (SADC) summit in Dar es Salaam on February 8, 2025. This ceasefire aims to address the ongoing conflict in eastern DRC, where M23 rebels have seized significant territories, leading to humanitarian concerns and regional instability.
International Mediation Efforts
The AU’s endorsement of the Doha talks underscores the importance of collaborative international efforts in resolving the DRC-Rwanda crisis. While the AU emphasizes “African solutions to African problems,” it acknowledges the constructive role that external partners, such as Qatar, can play in facilitating dialogue and peace initiatives.
Looking Ahead
The AU urges all parties involved to uphold their commitments to the ceasefire and engage in continued dialogue to ensure lasting peace and stability in the region. The successful implementation of these agreements is crucial for addressing the humanitarian needs of affected populations and fostering economic development in both nations.
