President Joe Biden has reiterated on Monday his unwillingness to quit the US election race, as the White House denied he had Parkinsonβs disease following a disastrous debate performance.
The 81-year-old dared the critics in his party to either challenge him at next monthβs party convention in Chicago or support him against Donald Trump in Novemberβs vote.
The president affirmed his position in a letter to Congress and a rare call to a television program. This week is critical for Biden as he will face a fresh scrutiny at a NATO summit in Washington.
βI am firmly committed to staying in the race,β Biden wrote in the letter.
βIt is time to come together, move forward as a unified party and defeat Donald Trump,β he said. βItβs time for it to end.β
The embattled president also followed up by making a call into a morning program on television, complaining of being frustrated by the elites in the party.
βAny of these guys that donβt think I should run β run against me. Announce for president, challenge me at the convention,β he added.
But despite his determination to continue in the presidential race, the pressure continued to mount on Biden, who is the oldest president in US history.
