Ukraine Launches More Than 1,000 Drones at Russia as Fires Hit St Petersburg Oil Facilities

Ukrainian drone attacks sparked fires at oil facilities in St Petersburg, Russia, on Sunday, October 18, 2026, as Moscow reported intercepting more than 1,000 Ukrainian drones in one of the largest aerial bombardments of the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war.

According to St Petersburg Governor Alexander Beglov, the attacks caused fires at the Petersburg Oil Terminal and the Ruchi oil depot. One person was killed and five others were injured, he said.

The strikes also reportedly targeted a logistics centre operated by Russian online retailer Ozon and a data centre belonging to technology company VK, according to statements from the companies. The attacks came amid escalating tensions between Kyiv and Washington over Ukraine’s continued strikes on Russian energy infrastructure.

Russia Reports Intercepting More Than 1,000 Drones

Russia’s Ministry of Defence said its forces destroyed 1,015 Ukrainian drones across 15 Russian regions, the annexed Crimean Peninsula and the Black Sea.

The reported scale of the operation highlights Ukraine’s continued use of long-range unmanned aircraft to strike targets far beyond the front lines.

Attacks on oil terminals and depots can disrupt fuel storage and transportation, putting pressure on infrastructure that supports Russia’s energy industry and broader wartime operations. However, the full extent of the damage caused by Sunday’s strikes was not immediately clear.

Deadly Russian Strikes Hit Zaporizhzhia

While Ukraine targeted facilities inside Russia, Russian attacks also caused casualties in southern Ukraine.

Local officials reported that a woman was killed and at least two other people were injured, including a six-year-old girl, in Russian strikes on Zaporizhzhia.

The attacks damaged two apartment buildings, 18 cars and an educational institution, according to Mykhailo Semikin, head of the Zaporizhzhia Regional Military Administration.

The latest incidents underline the continuing danger facing civilians as both countries intensify their aerial campaigns.

Energy Ceasefire Under Growing Pressure

The latest escalation comes amid uncertainty surrounding a proposed energy ceasefire announced by U.S. President Donald Trump on October 11.

Trump said Russia and Ukraine had agreed to stop attacking energy infrastructure, but the announcement did not include publicly detailed terms. Kyiv subsequently reported continued Russian attacks on Ukrainian energy facilities.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Russia had carried out 76 attacks against Ukraine’s energy, oil and gas sectors in the week following the announcement. He also reported attacks on energy facilities in four Ukrainian regions and said tens of thousands of families remained without electricity.

Ukraine resumed strikes against Russian oil infrastructure after a brief pause, arguing that Moscow’s continued attacks undermined the proposed truce.

Trump Faces Difficult Decisions Over Russia Policy

The attacks have added to tensions between Trump and Zelenskyy, as the U.S. president has criticised Ukrainian strikes on Russian oil facilities.

Trump has also left uncertainty over the future of additional sanctions against Moscow after temporarily waiving certain planned restrictions. His administration faces competing pressures involving fuel prices, relations with Russia and continued support for Ukraine.

With energy infrastructure remaining a major target for both sides, further attacks could complicate diplomatic efforts and increase concerns about fuel supplies and civilian electricity access.

The latest developments suggest that despite discussions about an energy ceasefire, the conflict continues to threaten critical infrastructure in both Russia and Ukraine.
