Serena Williams Returns to Wimbledon Four Years After Stepping Away From Tennis

Tennis legend Serena Williams has made a highly anticipated return to Wimbledon, marking her first singles appearance at the prestigious tournament since stepping away from professional tennis in 2022.

The 23-time Grand Slam champion officially resumed competition earlier this month when she teamed up with Canadian rising star Victoria Mboko in doubles at the HSBC Championships. The pair won their opening match before being eliminated in the second round after Mboko suffered an injury.

At Wimbledon, Williams received a wild-card entry into the singles draw and is also competing in doubles alongside her sister, Venus Williams. The Williams sisters are among the most successful doubles teams in tennis history, having captured 14 Grand Slam doubles titles together, including six championships at The Championships, Wimbledon.

In her singles return, Williams faces Australian player Maya Joint, a 20-year-old ranked No. 87 in the world. Joint is seeking her first main-draw victory at Wimbledon, while Williams brings a remarkable 98-14 career record at the tournament and seven Wimbledon singles titles. Her most recent Wimbledon appearance came in 2022, when she was eliminated in the opening round.

When Williams announced her departure from tennis in 2022, she deliberately avoided using the word “retirement,” instead describing the transition as an evolution away from the sport. In an essay published that year, she explained that she was moving toward other priorities in life while leaving open the possibility of future involvement in tennis.

Since then, Williams has expanded her business and philanthropic ventures while also welcoming her second child. Her decision to accept Wimbledon’s wild-card invitation came after her successful return to competition in doubles and represented a rare opportunity to compete once again on one of tennis’s biggest stages.

Speaking ahead of the tournament, Williams acknowledged that receiving a Wimbledon wild card is a privilege granted to only a select few players and suggested that this appearance could potentially be her final opportunity to compete at the All England Club.

Whether this marks the beginning of a longer comeback or a one-time return, Williams’ presence at Wimbledon has generated significant excitement among tennis fans and adds another chapter to the career of one of the sport’s greatest champions.
