Sen. Ruben Gallego Accuses Eric Swalwell of Lying as Misconduct Allegations Deepen

Ruben Gallego has publicly accused former Congressman Eric Swalwell of deception, saying their close personal relationship “clouded” his judgment amid mounting allegations of sexual misconduct.

Speaking at a news conference, Gallego expressed regret for previously trusting Swalwell, stating that he had directly asked him about the accusations when rumors began circulating. “He lied to me,” Gallego said, emphasizing that he had no prior knowledge of any alleged predatory behavior during their years working together in Congress.

Gallego, who shared a longstanding friendship with Swalwell that extended to their families, said he had only heard informal characterizations of Swalwell as “flirty” before the recent allegations surfaced. He stressed that he never personally witnessed any misconduct but now believes Swalwell misled him when confronted.

The controversy surrounding Swalwell has intensified following multiple accusations from women alleging inappropriate behavior, including claims of sexual assault and harassment. While some allegations have been corroborated by sources familiar with the accounts, others remain unverified.

Swalwell has denied the accusations, acknowledging past “mistakes” but rejecting claims of assault as false. His attorney has described the allegations as fabricated and politically motivated, vowing to fight them vigorously.

The fallout has already led to major political consequences. Swalwell withdrew from the California governor’s race and has since resigned from Congress after the House Ethics Committee opened an investigation into his conduct.

Gallego said he had urged Swalwell to step aside from the race following the emergence of the allegations and indicated he is willing to cooperate with any legal proceedings, including providing records if subpoenaed.

The case continues to unfold, with further legal action expected as accusers prepare to detail their claims and authorities assess the allegations.
