Pope Leo XIV has warned that rapid advances in artificial intelligence could create a “paradise of machines” that risks undermining human dignity and moral judgment, as he began his first official state visit to France.
Speaking Friday at the Élysée Palace in Paris alongside French President Emmanuel Macron, the pope raised concerns about the impact of artificial intelligence, scientific progress and other technologies on what it means to remain human.
Leo said society must ensure that technological development remains focused on the well-being and dignity of people. He called for greater emphasis on ethical discernment and the ability to recognize moral good as artificial intelligence becomes increasingly integrated into everyday life.
The pope’s concerns reflect themes he has previously raised in his first encyclical, Magnifica Humanitas, which addresses the rapid development of artificial intelligence, robotics and digital technologies. In the document, Leo argues that technological progress should serve humanity rather than weaken human freedom, responsibility and dignity.
His four-day visit to France also focuses on peace, human rights, faith and Europe’s future. Leo reaffirmed the Vatican’s opposition to nuclear weapons and criticized the doctrine of nuclear deterrence, saying lasting peace should be built through dialogue and justice rather than a balance of military power.
The visit is particularly significant because it is the first official papal state visit to France in 18 years. Large crowds are expected to attend events during Leo’s trip, including religious services and a youth gathering in Paris.
For Macron, the pope’s visit comes near the end of his presidential term and provides an opportunity to highlight France’s role in discussions about peace, international cooperation and human dignity. Macron told Leo that France supports peace, multilateralism, international law and the United Nations Charter.
Leo is also expected to visit UNESCO headquarters and the recently reopened Notre-Dame Cathedral during his time in Paris. His wider itinerary includes discussions about Europe’s future and a visit to Lourdes before the trip concludes in Metz.
