President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the reconstruction of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway using concrete pavement technology, marking a significant step toward improving one of Nigeria’s busiest and most economically important highways.

The federal government said the project is aimed at enhancing the durability and lifespan of the expressway, which serves as a major transportation corridor connecting Lagos, Ibadan, and several other parts of the country. Officials noted that concrete pavement is expected to provide greater resilience against heavy traffic and reduce long-term maintenance costs compared to traditional asphalt surfaces.

According to government officials, the reconstruction forms part of the Tinubu administration’s broader infrastructure agenda focused on modernising Nigeria’s road network, improving transportation efficiency, and supporting economic growth through strategic investments.

The Lagos-Ibadan Expressway is a critical route for commuters, freight operators, and businesses, handling thousands of vehicles daily and serving as a gateway to Nigeria’s commercial and industrial hubs.

The planned reconstruction is expected to improve road safety, reduce travel time, and enhance the movement of goods and services across the southwest region, benefiting both businesses and motorists.

Infrastructure experts have welcomed the adoption of concrete pavement, noting that while construction costs may be higher initially, the material typically requires less frequent repairs and performs better under heavy vehicle loads and harsh weather conditions.

The federal government reiterated its commitment to delivering quality infrastructure that supports national development, saying the project aligns with ongoing efforts to strengthen connectivity and stimulate economic activity across Nigeria.

Motorists have been advised to expect traffic management measures during various stages of construction as authorities work to minimise disruptions while ensuring the project’s timely completion.

The approval reinforces the administration’s focus on expanding and rehabilitating critical road infrastructure to improve transportation and promote sustainable economic development nationwide.
