NIGERIA : CAN Calls on Federal Government to Strengthen Protection for Schools and Children

The Christian Association of Nigeria has urged the Federal Government to place greater priority on the protection of schools and children amid ongoing security concerns affecting educational institutions across Nigeria.

The organization expressed concern over threats facing students, teachers, and school communities, calling for stronger security measures and policies aimed at safeguarding children’s right to education.

According to CAN, schools should remain safe environments where children can learn without fear of violence, insecurity, or disruption.

The group reportedly emphasized the importance of urgent government action to improve school safety infrastructure, intelligence gathering, and security presence in vulnerable areas.

Nigeria has faced repeated security challenges in recent years, including attacks, kidnappings, and threats targeting schools in some regions, raising national and international concern over student safety.

Education advocates say insecurity has contributed to school closures, interrupted learning, and increased anxiety among parents and communities.

The Christian Association of Nigeria also called for stronger collaboration between security agencies, local communities, religious leaders, and educational authorities to protect children effectively.

Child rights groups have consistently stressed that ensuring access to safe education is critical to national development and long-term stability.

Security analysts note that attacks on schools can have lasting social and economic consequences by disrupting education and increasing the number of out-of-school children.

The issue remains a major concern in Nigeria, which already faces challenges related to educational access, infrastructure, and youth development.

Government officials have previously pledged to improve school security through various initiatives and partnerships aimed at protecting students and educational facilities.

Meanwhile, parents and community leaders continue calling for practical measures that will restore confidence in the safety of schools nationwide.

The renewed appeal from CAN highlights growing pressure on authorities to address insecurity affecting children and educational institutions.

Education experts say protecting schools is essential not only for learning outcomes but also for social stability and economic progress.

Further discussions on school safety and national security are expected as stakeholders continue advocating stronger protections for Nigerian children.
