RIYADH, Saudi Arabia — Residents in Saudi Arabia’s capital reported hearing new explosions on Wednesday, October 14, as tensions escalated following repeated missile attacks targeting the kingdom amid its growing conflict with Yemen’s Houthi rebels.
The explosions were reported in Riyadh, including areas near King Khalid International Airport, which has faced repeated attacks over the past week. Saudi authorities issued air raid alerts for Riyadh and Kharj province, southeast of the capital, as security concerns continued to mount.
The source of the latest explosions was initially unclear. However, Saudi Arabia’s military coalition later said its air defences had intercepted a ballistic missile launched towards Riyadh. There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage directly linked to the latest incident.
Saudi Arabia Faces Renewed Missile Threats
The latest incident comes amid a series of attacks attributed to the Iran-backed Houthi movement in neighbouring Yemen. The group has claimed responsibility for previous strikes targeting Saudi airports, military installations and oil infrastructure.
Saudi Arabia’s air defence systems have intercepted several incoming missiles and drones in recent days. However, falling debris from intercepted weapons has caused injuries and property damage in residential areas.
Saudi Civil Defence reported on Wednesday that four people were injured after debris from two intercepted cruise missiles fell in Riyadh, damaging 15 homes. Authorities said emergency procedures had been implemented following the incident.
Oil Infrastructure and Aviation Under Pressure
The escalating attacks have raised concerns about the security of Saudi Arabia’s critical infrastructure, particularly its aviation and energy sectors.
On Tuesday, a fire broke out in an administrative building at a Saudi Aramco facility in the Eastern Province following an attack. The Saudi Energy Ministry described the fire as limited, and no injuries were reported.
The repeated threats have also disrupted air travel, with some airlines suspending services or adjusting operations because of security concerns. King Khalid International Airport has been among the facilities targeted during the recent escalation.
Regional Tensions Continue to Rise
The renewed attacks highlight the growing security challenges facing Saudi Arabia as hostilities involving the Houthis intensify.
Riyadh has been seeking greater support from international partners, including the United States, to strengthen its defences against missile and drone attacks.
Although Saudi authorities have intercepted several incoming weapons, continued strikes have raised concerns about civilian safety, regional stability and potential disruption to global energy supplies.
Officials are expected to continue monitoring the situation as the security threat evolves.
