More Manitobans Have a Choice of Candidates in 2026 Municipal Elections

More Manitobans are expected to have a wider choice of candidates in this year’s municipal elections, as more people step forward to seek local office across the province.

The 2026 municipal election is scheduled for Wednesday, October 28, when Manitobans will vote for mayors, reeves, councillors and school board trustees in communities across the province.

The increase in candidates comes as the Association of Manitoba Municipalities (AMM) reports that more people, including more women, have put their names forward ahead of the October election. The organization highlighted the growing number of prospective candidates in an October 1 update.

A larger field of candidates gives residents more opportunities to compare different priorities, leadership styles and approaches to issues affecting their communities.

Municipal governments are responsible for decisions that directly affect residents’ daily lives, including roads, infrastructure, local services, development, community planning and other municipal priorities. School board elections are also held on the same day as the general municipal election.

The growing number of candidates could make some local races more competitive, particularly in communities where several newcomers are challenging sitting councillors or where multiple candidates are seeking the same position.

For voters, the expanded choice also places greater emphasis on understanding the responsibilities of municipal office and evaluating what each candidate is proposing for the community.

The AMM has provided resources for both new and returning candidates, including a Municipal Candidate Guidebook outlining the election process and campaign-financing rules.

Elections Manitoba has also reminded residents that local elections are taking place across the province, although the agency itself does not administer municipal elections.

With election day approaching, candidates will have an opportunity to present their platforms and engage directly with residents on issues affecting their municipalities.

For Manitobans, the increased number of candidates means voters may have more options when deciding who they want to represent their communities for the next term.
