Mikel Oyarzabal Silences Critics with Record-Breaking Display as Spain Crush Saudi Arabia 4-0

Spain forward Mikel Oyarzabal delivered a stunning response to critics on Sunday, producing a sensational two-goal, one-assist performance to lead Spain to a commanding 4-0 victory over Saudi Arabia at the FIFA World Cup.

The 29-year-old returned to Atlanta Stadium determined to make amends after a disappointing World Cup debut that drew widespread criticism. Earlier in the tournament, Oyarzabal became the first player since 1966 to go the opening 30 minutes of a World Cup match without recording a single touch.

Just days later, he rewrote the narrative in spectacular fashion.

Oyarzabal became only the second player in World Cup history to score or assist three goals within the first 25 minutes of a match. The achievement had not been accomplished since Hungary’s László Fazekas in 1982.

Spain took control early when Oyarzabal delivered a precise cross to teenage sensation Lamine Yamal, who opened the scoring in the 10th minute. Oyarzabal then found the net himself twice in quick succession, scoring in the 21st and 24th minutes to put Spain firmly in command with a 3-0 lead before halftime.

The forward finished his impressive outing with five shots, three of which were on target, despite playing only 45 minutes.

Spain coach Luis de la Fuente praised Oyarzabal’s influence on the team, describing his impact as enormous and suggesting the forward has the potential to leave a lasting legacy in Spanish football.

Despite his record-setting performance, Oyarzabal remained focused on the team’s success rather than personal accolades. He downplayed the historic achievement, emphasizing that helping Spain secure victory was what mattered most.

The striker also acknowledged that Spain had been eager to bounce back after an underwhelming opening performance, saying the team knew it was capable of much better and was determined to make a strong statement.

With the convincing win, Spain strengthened its World Cup campaign and showcased the attacking quality that has made it one of the tournament favorites, while Oyarzabal completed one of the most dramatic turnarounds of the competition so far.
