Israel President Accepts Certified Election Results as Talks Begin on Forming New Government

JERUSALEM — Israeli President Isaac Herzog has formally accepted the certified results of the country’s recent parliamentary election, clearing the way for consultations with political parties as efforts begin to form a new government following an inconclusive vote.

Herzog received the official results on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, and announced that he would begin meeting representatives of parties elected to the 26th Knesset. The consultations are expected to help determine which lawmaker has the strongest chance of assembling a governing coalition.

The election left both Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s political bloc and the opposition alliance led by former military chief Gadi Eisenkot short of the 61 seats required for a parliamentary majority. The outcome has created uncertainty over Israel’s political leadership and opened the door to negotiations involving smaller parties.

Election Commission Finds No Evidence of Fraud

Herzog’s acceptance of the results followed the Central Elections Committee’s confirmation that its review found no evidence of fraud or irregularities that compromised the election or changed its outcome.

The announcement came amid repeated allegations from Netanyahu and members of his political camp that Arab-led parties had stolen the election, potentially with assistance from foreign actors.

The committee said its investigation examined complaints individually but found no evidence supporting claims that the results were invalid. Its acting director, Dean Livne, said the certified figures accurately reflected the choices made by voters.

A separate investigation by Israel’s Shin Bet domestic intelligence agency into allegations of possible foreign interference remains ongoing. However, the election committee indicated that there was no evidence that any suspected interference had affected the overall results.

Netanyahu’s Bloc Loses Parliamentary Majority

The election results represent a significant setback for Netanyahu’s religious-nationalist coalition, which failed to retain its parliamentary majority.

The final distribution left Netanyahu’s bloc with 53 seats, while the Jewish-led opposition parties secured 48. Arab-led parties won a combined 19 seats, increasing their influence in the negotiations over the next government.

Although the opposition parties collectively have a larger potential pool of support, disagreements over cooperation with Arab-led factions could complicate efforts to form an alternative administration.

Netanyahu has called for a broad governing coalition that excludes Arab-led parties, while some opposition figures have considered whether cooperation with those parties could provide the parliamentary numbers needed to replace his government.

Herzog Begins Consultations With Political Parties

Herzog’s consultations are scheduled to take place over two days, beginning Wednesday evening. Unlike previous practice, the president plans to meet smaller parliamentary factions before holding discussions with the largest parties.

His office said the approach is intended to allow a broader examination of possible governing arrangements and encourage political leaders to consider different options.

During the meetings, representatives of each faction will be asked whom they recommend for prime minister. Herzog will consider those recommendations before selecting a member of the Knesset to receive the mandate to form a government.

The president has also indicated that additional consultations could take place if necessary. His office has encouraged party leaders to approach the process with an open mind and consider possible agreements that could prevent another election.

Coalition Negotiations Could Take Weeks

Once Herzog formally assigns the mandate, the selected lawmaker will have 28 days to form a government. The president may grant an extension of up to 14 additional days if required.

The negotiations could involve alliances with smaller parties, cooperation between political rivals or an arrangement in which a government depends on support from parties outside its formal coalition.

If the initial candidate fails, another lawmaker may be given an opportunity to form a government. Continued failure to secure a governing majority could eventually lead to another national election.

Israel’s political system has experienced repeated electoral deadlocks in recent years, making the current negotiations particularly important for the country’s political stability.

Israel Faces an Uncertain Political Future

The election has exposed divisions within Israel’s political landscape, particularly over the role of Arab-led parties and the future direction of the government.

For Netanyahu, the loss of his bloc’s parliamentary majority creates uncertainty over his political future after years of leadership. For Eisenkot and other opposition figures, the challenge is to turn their electoral gains into a workable governing arrangement.

Herzog’s consultations therefore mark the beginning of a crucial stage in Israel’s political transition. Although the certified results have settled the election outcome, the negotiations ahead will determine who can command enough support in parliament to lead the next government.
