Indian Flydubai Captain Hailed as Hero After Copilot Attack During Flight

An Indian airline captain is being hailed as a hero after surviving a cockpit attack by his copilot during a Flydubai flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv, helping prevent what could have become a major aviation disaster.

Captain Smit Machchhar, a Mumbai native and Flydubai pilot, was seriously injured Wednesday when his copilot allegedly stabbed him during the flight. The Boeing 737 was carrying 174 passengers when the incident occurred.

According to witnesses and Israeli authorities, the aircraft began descending sharply after the attack. Despite being injured, Machchhar managed to open the cockpit door, allowing passengers and other crew members to enter and restrain the attacker.

The flight was subsequently diverted and made an emergency landing in Tabuk, northwestern Saudi Arabia. Machchhar was taken to a hospital and was reported to be in stable condition. The Indian Embassy in Riyadh said it was in contact with his family and Saudi authorities.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised Machchhar for his actions, describing him as a hero and saying his courage helped prevent a major tragedy. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also praised the captain, saying his actions and those of the passengers helped avert a potentially catastrophic incident.

Israeli authorities scrambled fighter jets after the incident because of concerns that the aircraft could have been hijacked. The alleged attacker, identified by Israeli authorities as an Omani national, was arrested after the plane landed in Saudi Arabia. His motive remains under investigation.

Authorities in Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Israel are involved in investigations into the incident. Flydubai has said the reasons behind the attack remain unknown and cautioned against premature speculation while inquiries continue.

Machchhar has worked for Flydubai for about four years. Before joining the airline, he spent more than a decade with Indian carrier SpiceJet, where he served as a senior commander and line training captain. His professional profile indicates that he has accumulated more than 9,750 flying hours.

The incident has renewed attention on cockpit security and aviation safety, particularly the procedures designed to protect flight crews and passengers during emergencies.

While the investigation continues, Machchhar’s response during the attack has earned widespread praise in India, Israel and beyond, as authorities work to establish exactly what triggered the confrontation and whether it was part of a broader security threat.
