French Unions Unite for Nationwide Strikes, Increasing Pressure on Macron’s Government

PARIS, France — France is bracing for widespread strikes and demonstrations as major trade unions join forces in a nationwide protest demanding higher wages, improved public services and action on the rising cost of living.

The coordinated action on Thursday, November 5, 2026, is expected to disrupt transportation, education and other public services, adding to the pressure on President Emmanuel Macron’s government after weeks of protests and unrest.

Major demonstrations are expected in Paris, Lyon and Marseille, with hundreds of thousands of people potentially participating. Authorities have announced the deployment of approximately 70,000 police officers nationwide to manage the demonstrations and prevent further violence.

Unions Demand Higher Wages and Better Public Services

The strike brings together major French labour organizations, including the CFDT, CGT, FO, Unsa and FSU. Their demands include higher wages and pensions, improved employment conditions, stronger public services and greater investment in industry.

Union leaders argue that household expenses have continued to rise while wages and pensions have failed to keep pace.

In a joint statement, the unions warned that France was facing a fragile economic and social situation, pointing to increasing layoffs, rising living costs and concerns about the country’s economic outlook.

They have also criticized the government’s proposed 2027 budget, arguing that planned savings and spending restrictions could further affect workers and public services.

Student Protests Add to Government Pressure

The labour action is also receiving support from students who have been protesting over deteriorating school facilities, teacher shortages and demands for increased education funding.

The movement began in September following complaints about staffing shortages at a high school southeast of Paris. It subsequently spread to other schools and universities, attracting young people concerned about educational conditions and their future opportunities.

The growing alliance between students and workers has expanded the demonstrations beyond education, turning them into a broader expression of dissatisfaction with living standards and government policies.

Transportation and Schools Face Disruptions

Rail services, public transportation, schools, hospitals and government offices are among the sectors expected to experience disruption.

French authorities are taking additional security measures following earlier demonstrations that involved clashes, looting and damage to public and private property.

The government has defended its approach to maintaining public order while saying allegations of police misconduct will be investigated.

Macron Faces Growing Political Challenges

The latest demonstrations present another challenge for Macron’s government as it attempts to address economic concerns and restore calm.

Government representatives have held discussions with union leaders, but disagreements over wages, public spending and social conditions remain unresolved.

The nationwide action highlights the growing pressure on French authorities to respond to workers’ demands, improve public services and address the concerns driving the country’s continuing protest movement.
