France’s Macron Vows to Hold Rioters Accountable After Nationwide Protests

French President Emmanuel Macron has vowed to hold those responsible for violent demonstrations, looting and destruction across France accountable, declaring that individuals who sought to undermine the country’s democratic institutions would face consequences.

In a televised address on Sunday, October 18, 2026, Macron expressed anger and shame over the violence that followed nationwide demonstrations against rising living costs and poor conditions in schools. He warned that those involved in looting would be required to pay for the damage caused.

The unrest has resulted in at least 1,800 arrests, according to authorities, while public buildings, businesses and vehicles have been damaged in several major cities.

Macron Condemns Violence and Looting

Macron condemned what he described as uncontrolled violence, blaming radical far-left groups and individuals who took advantage of the demonstrations to commit crimes.

He stressed that peaceful protest remained a fundamental democratic right but said that right could not justify arson, vandalism, attacks on public institutions or the destruction of private property.

The president also instructed local government representatives, known as prefects, to work with mayors and law enforcement agencies to protect public buildings and businesses. He said authorities could prohibit certain gatherings where necessary to prevent further violence.

Historic Limoges Town Hall Severely Damaged

One of the most serious incidents occurred in Limoges, where a fire engulfed the city’s historic 19th-century town hall. The blaze caused the roof to collapse and severely damaged the building.

Other cities, including Paris, Marseille, Lyon and Bordeaux, also experienced looting, fires and confrontations between demonstrators and police.

In Paris, streets around Place de la République were left with broken glass, damaged storefronts and debris. Police maintained a heavy presence on Sunday as smaller groups continued to cause disturbances.

Authorities reported that more than 500 police officers, gendarmes and firefighters had been injured during the unrest. The circumstances surrounding a reported death from a heart attack during the demonstrations in Paris were also being investigated.

Rising Living Costs Fuel Nationwide Demonstrations

The protests began amid growing frustration over household expenses, education conditions and concerns about public services.

Trade unions, student organisations and other activists helped mobilise demonstrators, with some participants seeking to revive the Yellow Vest movement that emerged in 2018 over fuel taxes and economic inequality.

French authorities estimated that approximately 550,000 people participated in demonstrations nationwide, while organisers put the figure at around 800,000.

Although many participants marched peacefully, violence by some groups overshadowed the demonstrations and intensified the debate over how authorities should balance public safety with the right to protest.

Government Faces Pressure to Restore Order

Macron’s response comes as his government faces criticism from political opponents over its handling of the unrest. Some opposition figures have questioned the authorities’ response, while others have condemned the destruction and called for stronger measures to protect communities.

The president has also called for discussions involving students, teachers, lawmakers, trade unions and business representatives to develop proposals addressing the crisis.

As investigations continue, the government faces two major challenges: holding those responsible for violence accountable and responding to the economic and social concerns that brought hundreds of thousands of people onto the streets.
