Former Virginia Lieutenant Governor Justin Fairfax has died in an apparent murder-suicide after fatally shooting his wife, Cerina Fairfax, at their home in Annandale, Virginia, according to police.
Authorities say the couple were found dead after their teenage son called emergency services shortly after midnight. Fairfax County Police Chief Kevin Davis confirmed that the pair had been separated and were in the process of divorcing, but were still living under the same roof with their two children, who were present in the home at the time of the incident.
Investigators are examining whether recent legal developments may have contributed to the tragedy. Fairfax had reportedly been served court documents indicating an upcoming appearance, with officials stating that detectives are working to determine if that played a role.
Describing the incident as deeply shocking, Davis noted the widespread impact on the local community, particularly among those familiar with the Fairfax family.
Cerina Fairfax was a respected dental professional who operated a family dentistry practice in northern Virginia. She was an alumna of Duke University and the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Dentistry, which recognized her in 2015 as its most outstanding alumna of the previous decade.
Justin Fairfax once stood as a prominent rising figure within the Democratic Party. In 2019, he was briefly positioned to potentially assume the governorship amid a scandal involving then-Governor Ralph Northam. However, his political trajectory shifted dramatically after multiple sexual assault allegations surfaced.
Two women, Vanessa Tyson and Meredith Watson, publicly accused Fairfax of sexual assault dating back to 2000 and 2004. Fairfax consistently denied the allegations, asserting that the encounters were consensual and characterizing the claims as politically motivated.
Despite resisting calls to resign, Fairfax’s political career never fully recovered. His 2021 bid for governor was unsuccessful, as he struggled to regain support within the Democratic establishment.
Before serving as lieutenant governor from 2018 to 2022, Fairfax had worked as a federal prosecutor and civil litigator, and previously ran for attorney general in 2013.
Virginia’s current lieutenant governor, Ghazala Hashmi, described the deaths as devastating, extending condolences to the couple’s children, family members, and friends while awaiting further details from investigators.
