Former Summerside Mayor Dan Kutcher is the sole approved candidate for the leadership of the Prince Edward Island Liberal Party, positioning him to become the party’s next leader after no other contenders entered the race before the nomination deadline.
The P.E.I. Liberal Party confirmed that Kutcher was the only approved candidate when nominations closed. He stepped down as Summerside mayor last month to pursue the provincial leadership, after announcing earlier that he would not seek another term in the city’s November municipal election.
Kutcher was first elected mayor of Summerside in 2022. He has also said he intends to seek the Liberal nomination in District 21, regardless of the outcome of the leadership race.
The uncontested leadership race follows the resignation of former Liberal leader Robert Mitchell, who stepped down after the party’s defeat in the Cornwall-Meadowbank byelection earlier this year. The party is now seeking to rebuild ahead of the next provincial election.
Kutcher has said he wants to bring a clearer direction to the province, emphasizing listening, collaboration and practical action. He has also argued that P.E.I. needs a change in political direction and has called for Islanders to have a greater role in shaping the party’s policy agenda.
Although Kutcher is currently the sole candidate, he will not formally take over as party leader until the P.E.I. Liberal leadership convention on October 25, 2026, according to the party’s published leadership schedule.
The leadership transition comes as the Liberals prepare to challenge the governing Progressive Conservatives on issues including health care, energy security, affordability and the province’s financial outlook.
Kutcher’s move from municipal politics to provincial leadership could also give the Liberals an opportunity to present a fresh political face as they work to reconnect with voters across Prince Edward Island.
For now, the uncontested race gives Kutcher a clear path to the Liberal leadership, but the larger challenge will be turning that leadership mandate into a competitive provincial campaign.
