Firm Behind Planned Anthropic Data Centre in Nova Scotia Denies Owing Fees to Newfoundland and Labrador

EverWind Fuels, the company behind a proposed multibillion-dollar artificial intelligence data centre in Nova Scotia that will serve Anthropic, has denied owing fees to Newfoundland and Labrador, as attention grows around the company’s business activities and major investment plans.

The dispute comes as EverWind advances plans for a data centre campus at Point Tupper in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. The proposed development, announced in October 2026, is part of an investment package valued at more than $10 billion, which the company says would be the largest privately funded investment in the province’s history.

EverWind has announced that Anthropic, the American artificial intelligence company behind the Claude AI assistant, has signed a long-term lease for data centre capacity at the Point Tupper site.

The project is expected to begin with a 95-megawatt phase in late 2027, followed by a proposed expansion of 325 megawatts in 2028, subject to regulatory requirements. At full capacity, the facility could draw up to 420 megawatts of electricity.

The company has said the broader investment includes approximately $8 billion for the data centre and $2 billion for onshore wind energy projects. EverWind also says it intends to cover electricity infrastructure costs associated with the development so existing customers do not bear those expenses.

Questions Surround the Company’s Financial Obligations

EverWind’s denial concerning fees allegedly owed to Newfoundland and Labrador places its financial obligations under scrutiny as the company pursues its ambitious expansion plans.

However, the specific nature of the fees, the amount involved and the circumstances behind the disagreement were not detailed in the available reports reviewed for this article. The company’s position should therefore be distinguished from any independently established findings about whether money is owed.

Data Centre Project Faces Public Scrutiny

Beyond the dispute over fees, the planned Nova Scotia data centre has attracted questions about electricity demand, water consumption, environmental protections and public consultation.

Opposition politicians and environmental advocates have called for stronger safeguards and greater transparency before the project proceeds. Concerns include the potential effect on local water resources and electricity infrastructure, as well as whether existing regulations adequately protect residents.

EverWind says the development will include a closed-loop cooling system and measures intended to limit the impact on local resources. The company has also said it will fund infrastructure costs associated with the project. These commitments will be subject to the applicable approval and regulatory processes.

Major Investment With Outstanding Questions

The planned Anthropic data centre could position Nova Scotia as a significant location for artificial intelligence infrastructure in Canada. However, the project’s scale has also increased scrutiny of the company, its financial commitments and the regulatory framework governing the development.

As discussions continue, clarification of EverWind’s alleged fees dispute with Newfoundland and Labrador will be important to understanding the matter fully. Until further details are confirmed, the company’s denial and the precise status of the alleged debt remain key points in the developing story.
