Canada Expected to Spend Over $1 Billion Hosting 2026 FIFA World Cup, Budget Watchdog Reveals

Canada is projected to spend more than $1 billion in public funding to host matches during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, according to a new report released by the country’s Parliamentary Budget Officer.

The report estimates that hosting the global football tournament will cost approximately $1.07 billion overall, with the federal government contributing roughly $473 million while provincial and municipal governments cover the remaining expenses.

The watchdog also estimated that each World Cup match hosted in Canada will cost taxpayers around $82 million, a figure officials say is consistent with spending levels seen at previous FIFA World Cup events hosted around the world.

Canada is co-hosting the 2026 tournament alongside the United States and Mexico, marking the first time three countries will jointly host the men’s World Cup.

The Canadian portion of the tournament will feature 13 matches spread across two major cities. Toronto will host six games, while Vancouver will stage seven matches between June 11 and July 19, 2026.

Preparations are already underway in both cities, including significant stadium upgrades and infrastructure improvements. In Toronto, work continues at BMO Field to transform the venue into a FIFA-compliant World Cup stadium capable of hosting international matches and accommodating larger crowds.

Supporters of the investment argue the tournament will generate major economic activity through tourism, hospitality, global exposure, and job creation. Critics, however, continue to question whether the long-term economic benefits will outweigh the substantial public costs tied to hosting the global sporting event.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup is expected to be the largest edition in the tournament’s history, featuring an expanded format with 48 national teams competing across North America.
