Arrests and Detentions of Canadians Rise Sharply in the U.S. as Travel Registrations Increase

The number of Canadian citizens arrested or detained in the United States has increased sharply, even as fewer Canadians are travelling south of the border, according to new figures from Global Affairs Canada.

The department’s latest annual report on consular cases shows that arrest and detention cases involving Canadians rose by 60 per cent between April 2025 and March 2026. The increase comes despite a reported 25 per cent decline in visits by Canadians to the United States during the same period.

Global Affairs Canada did not provide a specific explanation for the increase in arrests and detentions. However, the figures come at a time of heightened immigration enforcement in the United States, including expanded immigration raids under U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration.

The increase has also drawn attention to the experiences of Canadian travellers at U.S. borders. Some Canadians have reported facing more extensive questioning from American border officials, contributing to growing concerns among travellers about what they may encounter when entering the United States.

Canadian Arrests Increase Globally

The rise in arrests was not limited to the United States.

According to the Global Affairs Canada report, the overall number of arrests involving Canadians around the world increased by approximately one-fifth during the reporting period. Thailand recorded one of the most significant increases, with the number of arrests involving Canadians there tripling.

The department regularly assists Canadians who encounter legal, security or other emergencies while abroad. Consular officials can provide information about local procedures and help Canadians communicate with authorities, although they cannot override foreign laws or intervene directly in another country’s legal proceedings.

Global Affairs Canada has also warned that international crises are making consular cases increasingly complex and costly to manage. Wars, political instability, natural disasters and other emergencies can require Canadian officials to provide assistance to citizens in difficult and rapidly changing circumstances.

More Canadians Registering Their Travel

Alongside the increase in arrests and detentions, more Canadians are voluntarily registering their trips abroad with the federal government.

The registration system allows Canadians travelling or living temporarily outside the country to provide contact information and details about their destination. The information can help Canadian officials issue safety alerts and communicate with citizens during emergencies.

It can also assist Ottawa in coordinating evacuations when major crises occur.

The increase in registrations suggests that more Canadians are taking steps to remain connected with Canadian authorities while travelling internationally, particularly amid growing concerns about security, immigration enforcement and global instability.

The latest figures are likely to attract attention among Canadians planning trips to the United States, which remains one of Canada’s most popular international destinations.

However, the increase in arrests and detentions does not necessarily mean that Canadian travellers are being arrested at a higher rate because of a single policy or development. Global Affairs Canada’s report does not establish a direct cause for the increase.

Canadian travellers heading to the United States are nevertheless being encouraged to understand U.S. entry requirements, carry appropriate documentation and be aware that Canadian citizenship does not exempt them from American laws and border regulations.

The figures underline the importance of consular preparedness as Canadians continue to travel internationally despite an increasingly complicated global environment.
