TEHRAN — Iranian officials have welcomed the Republican Party’s major losses in the 2026 United States midterm elections, interpreting the results as a rejection of President Donald Trump’s war against Iran.
Democrats secured control of both chambers of Congress in Tuesday’s elections, dealing a significant political setback to Trump amid growing concerns about the conflict and rising fuel prices.
Iranian Parliament Speaker and chief negotiator Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf said American voters had delivered a clear message against war. He warned Washington against ignoring public opinion as diplomatic efforts continue to prevent renewed fighting.
However, Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei maintained that the election results would not fundamentally change Washington’s approach toward Iran.
Tehran Celebrates Republican Losses
Thousands of government supporters gathered in Tehran on Wednesday to mark the anniversary of the 1979 takeover of the United States Embassy.
Demonstrators burned American and Israeli flags, displayed images of Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and chanted anti-American and anti-Israeli slogans.
The demonstrations coincided with Iranian officials celebrating Trump’s electoral setback. Nevertheless, tensions remain high, with concerns that the United States could resume military operations despite ongoing diplomatic discussions.
Houthis Claim Attacks on Saudi Arabia
Meanwhile, Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi movement claimed it launched attacks targeting King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh and other locations in southern Saudi Arabia.
The group’s military spokesperson, Yahya Saree, claimed a ballistic missile targeted the airport, while additional weapons were directed at a radar installation and a command centre in Jazan province.
The Associated Press said it could not independently verify the claims. Saudi authorities issued safety alerts in Riyadh, Jazan and Najran amid the reported threats.
Israeli Strike Kills One in Southern Lebanon
In Lebanon, an Israeli drone strike targeting a motorcycle in the southern village of Qabrikha killed one person and injured another, according to the Lebanese Health Ministry.
The Israeli military said it had targeted two people allegedly observing Israeli soldiers but provided no further details.
The incident marked the first such reported drone strike in nearly a month following a U.S.-brokered ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah in late June.
Regional Tensions Remain High
With diplomatic efforts continuing, governments across the Middle East are watching closely for signs of renewed military escalation.
Iran’s reaction to the U.S. election, the Houthi claims involving Saudi Arabia and the latest Israeli strike in Lebanon demonstrate the continuing instability across the region.
