Trump Defiant After Voters Deliver Midterm Election Rebuke to Republicans

WASHINGTON — U.S. President Donald Trump has responded defiantly after voters delivered a major electoral setback to Republicans in the 2026 midterm elections, with Democrats taking control of both chambers of Congress and securing victories in several traditionally Republican strongholds.

Despite the scale of the losses, Trump sought to distance himself from the outcome, arguing that Republicans would have performed much better if he had personally been on the ballot. He also indicated that he would accept the results and work with Democratic lawmakers, while making clear that he intended to resist parts of their legislative agenda.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump declared that Republicans would have won in a landslide if he had been a candidate in the election. His response came after Democrats made significant gains in Senate, House and gubernatorial races across the country.

Democrats Take Control of Congress

The election results represent a significant shift in Washington’s political balance, with Democrats winning control of both the Senate and the House of Representatives.

Several Republican-held seats changed hands, including in states where Trump had campaigned extensively and endorsed candidates. Democrats secured victories in Texas, South Carolina, North Carolina and Ohio, among other closely watched contests.

The results also included notable political milestones. Democrat James Talarico defeated Republican Ken Paxton in Texas, while Annie Andrews won in South Carolina. In North Carolina, former governor Roy Cooper defeated Republican Michael Whatley.

The losses raised questions about the influence of Trump’s endorsements and his decision to place himself at the center of the Republican midterm campaign.

Trump Shifts Blame to Republican Candidates

Rather than accepting personal responsibility for the party’s poor performance, Trump questioned the quality of some Republican candidates.

He argued that candidate selection played an important role in the outcome and said he had done more to promote certain candidates than they had done to promote themselves.

Trump also criticized Texas Governor Greg Abbott, who lost his re-election campaign to Democrat Gina Hinojosa. The president suggested Abbott’s political positioning contributed to his defeat.

The comments have renewed debate within the Republican Party over Trump’s influence on candidate selection and whether his political strategy helped or hurt Republicans in competitive races.

Several of the defeated candidates had received Trump’s endorsement and benefited from his campaign appearances. However, voters’ concerns about the economy, tariffs and the war involving Iran also featured prominently in the election campaign.

President Says He Will Accept the Results

Trump’s response to the election also drew attention because of his previous refusal to accept the outcome of the 2020 presidential election.

Speaking to The New York Times after the latest results became clear, Trump said he was willing to accept the outcome and indicated that his administration would work with Democrats.

He said he looked forward to working with the opposition party, suggesting that agreements could be reached on some issues.

However, his conciliatory remarks were accompanied by a warning about his approach to Democratic legislation. Trump subsequently posted an image of his red MAGA cap with the word “VETO,” signalling his intention to block proposals he opposes.

The White House also described the president’s mood as defiant and indicated that he would become more determined to challenge what it considers the policies of the political left.

Economic Concerns and Iran Conflict Feature in Election Fallout

The results have intensified scrutiny of the administration’s economic policies, particularly its tariffs and the financial consequences of the conflict involving Iran.

Democrats made affordability a central issue during their campaigns, pointing to the cost of living and rising prices. The war with Iran also became a major campaign issue, with voters expressing concern about its economic consequences.

An AP voter survey found that approximately two-thirds of voters believed Trump’s policies had worsened economic conditions, while a similar proportion said his tariff policies had harmed the national or local economy.

The election therefore delivered a clear political challenge to the Republican administration as it approaches the final two years of Trump’s second term.

A Difficult Final Two Years for Trump’s Administration

With Democrats controlling both chambers of Congress, Trump’s administration is likely to face greater scrutiny and increased resistance to its legislative priorities.

Democratic lawmakers have already identified potential areas for congressional investigations, including administration policies, government conduct and the business activities of Trump’s family.

A Democratic majority would also give the party greater control over congressional committees and investigative powers, potentially creating further political confrontations between the White House and Congress.

For Trump, the midterm results mark a major setback for his party and raise questions about how he will govern with a Democratic-controlled legislature.

Although he has said he is prepared to accept the election outcome, his public comments suggest that he intends to remain politically combative as the administration enters the final stretch of his presidency.
