LOS ANGELES, California — Sir Patrick Stewart, the celebrated British actor best known for portraying Captain Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek: The Next Generation and Professor Charles Xavier in the X-Men film franchise, has died at the age of 86.

Stewart died on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, at his home in Los Angeles following what his family described as a brief and poignant journey with Alzheimer’s disease and Lewy body dementia. His death was announced on Thursday through a statement shared on his official social media accounts.

His passing marks the loss of one of Britain’s most respected stage and screen performers, whose career spanned more than six decades and earned him international recognition across theatre, television and film.

A Distinguished Career From Shakespeare to Hollywood

Born on July 13, 1940, in Mirfield, West Yorkshire, England, Stewart grew up in a working-class family. His interest in acting developed during his school years after a teacher introduced him to the works of William Shakespeare.

He joined the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1966 and spent approximately 14 years with the prestigious theatre organization. During that period, he established himself as a respected stage performer, taking on demanding roles in classical productions.

His theatre career included performances in Macbeth, Hamlet, The Merchant of Venice and A Midsummer Night’s Dream. His interpretation of Macbeth, which eventually reached Broadway in 2008, earned him a Tony Award nomination.

Although he had built an accomplished reputation in British theatre, international fame came later in his career when he accepted the role of Captain Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek: The Next Generation.

Patrick Stewart’s Legacy as Captain Jean-Luc Picard

Stewart became a household name through his portrayal of Captain Jean-Luc Picard, the commanding officer of the USS Enterprise in Star Trek: The Next Generation.

The television series ran from 1987 to 1994, covering seven seasons and 176 episodes. His portrayal of Picard became one of the defining performances in the science-fiction franchise.

Unlike the more adventurous leadership style associated with the original series’ Captain James T. Kirk, Picard became known for his thoughtful decision-making, diplomacy, intellectual curiosity and commitment to peaceful solutions.

Stewart later reprised the character in several Star Trek films and returned to the role in the television series Star Trek: Picard, which premiered in 2020.

His memorable command, “Make it so,” became one of the franchise’s most recognizable expressions.

Professor X Role Made Him a Marvel Icon

Beyond Star Trek, Stewart gained another generation of fans through his portrayal of Professor Charles Xavier, also known as Professor X, in the X-Men movies.

He first appeared as the powerful telepath and founder of the X-Men in the 2000 film X-Men. He subsequently reprised the character in several instalments of the franchise, appearing alongside actors including Hugh Jackman and Ian McKellen.

His performance helped establish Professor X as one of the most recognizable characters in the superhero film universe.

Stewart also returned to the role in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness in 2022, further connecting his character to the wider Marvel Cinematic Universe.

His contributions to both Star Trek and X-Men made him one of the few performers to achieve iconic status across two major entertainment franchises.

Fellow Actors Pay Tribute to the Late Star

News of Stewart’s death prompted tributes from colleagues, co-stars and entertainment figures around the world.

Hugh Jackman, who worked alongside Stewart in the X-Men films, described him as a great actor, a tremendous friend and a man from whom he learned a great deal.

William Shatner, who portrayed Captain James T. Kirk in the original Star Trek television series, also expressed sadness over the loss. He remembered Stewart as a friend and colleague whose performances brought intelligence, grace and humanity to the franchise.

Marvel Studios paid tribute to the actor, describing him as a remarkable talent whose interpretation of Professor Charles Xavier had helped define the character for generations of viewers.

Family Life, Knighthood and Humanitarian Work

Stewart was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 2010 for his services to drama, becoming Sir Patrick Stewart.

Away from acting, he was involved in humanitarian and charitable activities, including advocacy for survivors of domestic violence and support for refugees. He also served as an ambassador for the International Rescue Committee.

He married American singer and songwriter Sunny Ozell in 2013. The couple remained together until his death. Stewart is survived by his wife and two children, Sophia and Daniel, from his earlier marriage to Sheila Falconer.

Remembering a Lasting Entertainment Legacy

Patrick Stewart’s career demonstrated the lasting influence of classical theatre training across different forms of entertainment.

From Shakespearean productions to science-fiction television and blockbuster superhero films, he brought a distinctive voice, commanding presence and emotional depth to his performances.

His work introduced him to audiences across generations, while his portrayal of Captain Picard and Professor X secured his place in popular culture.

As tributes continue to emerge, Stewart is being remembered not only for his celebrated screen characters but also for his contribution to theatre, humanitarian causes and the wider entertainment industry.

His legacy will remain part of television, film and stage history for years to come.
