Spain Train Crash: At Least 30 Dead After Two High-Speed Trains Collide in Central Spain

TOLEDO, Spain — At least 30 people have died after two high-speed trains collided in central Spain on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, in a devastating railway accident that has triggered a major emergency response and disrupted rail services between Madrid and southern Spain.

The collision occurred in the province of Toledo, between the towns of Urda and Los Yébenes, when a train reportedly struck the rear of another train that had stopped. The impact derailed carriages and left severely damaged wreckage scattered across an embankment.

Spanish media reported the rising death toll as emergency workers continued rescue operations. Authorities warned that the number of casualties could change as teams reached the most severely damaged carriages and assessed the condition of passengers.

The crash is Spain’s second major fatal train accident this year, renewing concerns about railway safety as the country continues to operate one of Europe’s largest high-speed rail networks.

Two High-Speed Trains Carrying Hundreds of Passengers Collide

The accident involved trains operated by Spain’s state-owned Renfe and private rail company Iryo. Both were reportedly travelling from Madrid toward southern Spain when the collision occurred shortly after 9 a.m. local time.

According to regional government officials, the Renfe train was carrying approximately 397 passengers, while the Iryo service had around 147 people on board.

Initial reports indicated that the collision caused two carriages to leave the tracks. Images from the scene showed badly damaged train cars, twisted metal and debris scattered down a slope beside the railway line.

The precise circumstances that led to the collision have not yet been established. Investigators will need to determine why one train was stopped, what caused the other to strike it and whether any technical or operational failures contributed to the accident.

Emergency Teams Race to Rescue Survivors

Emergency services have deployed firefighters, police officers, medical personnel and other rescue workers to the crash site.

Authorities have also mobilized additional medical resources to treat injured passengers and transport them to nearby hospitals. Regional officials said hospitals were coordinating their response to accommodate casualties requiring urgent treatment.

The severity of the impact has complicated rescue efforts, particularly around the most damaged carriages. Emergency workers have been tasked with locating survivors, recovering victims and ensuring that the wreckage can be searched safely.

Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez cancelled his scheduled activities to focus on the disaster and coordinate with the authorities handling the response.

Sánchez expressed shock over the accident and extended his condolences and support to the victims and their families. Spain’s King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia also expressed their sorrow and solidarity with those affected.

Rail Services Suspended Between Madrid and Andalusia

Spain’s rail infrastructure operator, ADIF, confirmed that services on the high-speed line connecting Madrid with Andalusia had been suspended following the collision.

The disruption affects a major transport corridor used by passengers travelling between the capital and southern cities, including Seville.

Rail operators have activated emergency procedures and are working with authorities as rescue operations continue. Passengers scheduled to travel along the affected route may experience cancellations and delays while officials assess the damage and determine when services can safely resume.

The suspension is intended to allow emergency personnel to work at the scene and prevent further risks while the investigation gets underway.

Second Major Train Disaster in Spain This Year

The Toledo collision comes months after another deadly railway accident in southern Spain.

In January 2026, a train derailed near Adamuz in Córdoba province and collided with an oncoming train, killing dozens of people and injuring many others.

That disaster prompted renewed public debate about railway maintenance, infrastructure investment and safety standards across Spain’s extensive rail network.

The latest crash is likely to intensify scrutiny of the systems and procedures governing high-speed passenger services. However, the cause of Wednesday’s collision remains unknown, and investigators have yet to establish whether equipment failure, signalling problems, human error or another factor played a role.

Spain has invested heavily in high-speed rail over several decades, developing a network that connects major cities and supports domestic travel. The latest tragedy has nevertheless raised fresh questions about the safety of its railway operations.

Investigation Expected as Death Toll Is Assessed

Authorities are continuing to assess the scale of the disaster while emergency teams search the damaged trains and assist survivors.

Investigators will examine the trains, railway infrastructure, signalling systems and operational records to establish what happened before the collision.

For the families of those killed and injured, the immediate priority is receiving information about their loved ones and obtaining medical assistance for survivors.

As Spain mourns the victims, officials face the urgent task of completing rescue operations, supporting affected passengers and determining the circumstances behind one of the country’s deadliest railway incidents in recent years.
