Tinubu Launches 2027 Re-Election Campaign Amid Nigeria’s Cost-of-Living Crisis and Divided Opposition

Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially launched his campaign for a second term in office, seeking to secure another four years as the country faces persistent economic hardship, rising living costs and growing concerns about insecurity.

Tinubu launched his re-election campaign on Saturday, October 24, 2026, at a rally in Kaduna State, where thousands of supporters of his All Progressives Congress (APC) gathered. The campaign comes ahead of Nigeria’s presidential election scheduled for January 16, 2027, with economic conditions and security expected to feature prominently in the political debate.

Tinubu Defends Economic Reforms

Speaking to supporters in Kaduna, Tinubu defended his administration’s economic policies and promised improved prosperity, growth and opportunities for Nigerians.

The president also blamed opposition parties for the country’s hunger and poverty, arguing that his government was working to address the challenges.

Since taking office in May 2023, Tinubu has introduced significant economic reforms, including removing the longstanding petrol subsidy and changing the foreign exchange system. His administration has defended the measures as necessary to improve government finances and strengthen the economy.

However, the reforms have contributed to substantial increases in living costs, with higher fuel prices and currency depreciation putting pressure on households and businesses. Although some economic indicators have improved, many Nigerians continue to struggle with the cost of food, transportation, housing and other essential goods.

Cost of Living Remains a Major Election Issue

Economic hardship is expected to be a central issue during the 2027 election campaign.

Petrol prices reached approximately ₦1,400 to ₦1,500 per litre in parts of Nigeria in September 2026, increasing transportation expenses and adding to the financial pressure on households.

The rising cost of essential goods has also intensified public debate over whether the benefits of the government’s economic reforms are reaching ordinary citizens.

Tinubu has maintained that his policies are intended to create a more stable economic foundation and improve long-term growth. Critics, however, argue that the immediate consequences have placed an excessive burden on Nigerians who are already facing financial difficulties.

The administration will therefore face questions about inflation, employment, purchasing power and how quickly economic improvements can translate into better living conditions.

Divided Opposition Prepares for Presidential Contest

Tinubu’s re-election campaign comes as opposition parties continue preparing their own campaigns following unsuccessful efforts to establish a united front against the president.

Among the prominent challengers are former Vice President Atiku Abubakar of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and Peter Obi of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC). Both candidates contested the 2023 presidential election, finishing behind Tinubu.

Atiku and Obi were among opposition figures who explored an alliance in 2025 to challenge the ruling APC, but the proposed coalition ultimately collapsed.

The divided opposition means that several candidates could compete for votes among Nigerians dissatisfied with the current administration. Nevertheless, the election’s outcome remains uncertain, and the strength of the various campaigns will depend on voter priorities, party organization and developments before election day.

Security Also Features in Election Debate

Beyond economic concerns, insecurity remains a significant challenge for Nigeria.

Armed banditry and kidnappings continue to affect parts of the northwest, while an Islamist insurgency has persisted in the northeast. These security problems have raised concerns about public safety, displacement, economic activity and the government’s ability to protect communities.

The president’s campaign will need to address questions about the progress of security operations and the measures planned to improve safety across the country.

Nigeria Heads Toward a Closely Watched Election

Tinubu’s campaign launch marks the beginning of an important phase in preparations for the 2027 presidential election.

As the ruling APC seeks another term, the administration’s economic record, security policies and promises for the future are likely to face close scrutiny from voters and opposition parties.

For many Nigerians, the central question will be whether the government’s reforms can deliver meaningful improvements in household incomes, affordability and security.

With the opposition divided and economic concerns continuing to shape public debate, the months ahead will be important for candidates seeking to persuade Nigerians of their plans for the country’s future.
