Waverley West city council candidate Nafiya Naso has outlined her priorities for one of Winnipeg’s fastest-growing wards, placing public safety, affordability, recreation and improved community services at the centre of her campaign.
Speaking in an interview with SWIFTE Radio, Naso discussed her journey from arriving in Winnipeg as a refugee from Iraq to becoming a homeowner, business owner and community advocate. She said her personal experiences have strengthened her desire to contribute to the development of the community and represent residents at City Hall.
Naso said months of door-to-door campaigning have given her an opportunity to hear directly from residents about the issues affecting their daily lives. According to the candidate, public safety, the rising cost of living and access to recreational facilities have emerged as some of the key concerns in Waverley West.
On public safety, Naso said she would advocate for increased police presence in the ward. She also emphasized the importance of economic development, saying initiatives that encourage business growth could help expand Winnipeg’s tax base and support improved municipal services.
Recreation and infrastructure are also central to Naso’s campaign. She said major projects planned for Waverley West should be completed on schedule and within their approved budgets, particularly as the ward continues to experience significant population growth.
Transportation and public transit also featured in her vision for the community. Naso said Winnipeg’s transit system must continue to adapt as neighbourhoods grow and residents’ needs change. At the same time, she acknowledged that the current transit system has generally served many Waverley West residents.
Naso is also drawing on her professional and community experience as she seeks a seat on city council. Her background includes work in healthcare, social services, business and community leadership. She said these experiences have allowed her to work with people from different backgrounds and engage with various levels of government.
As the civic election approaches, Naso said she wants to represent the entire Waverley West community, regardless of residents’ backgrounds or whether they support her candidacy.
Her campaign comes at a time when Waverley West continues to grow rapidly, increasing demand for infrastructure, transportation, recreation, public safety and other municipal services.
Naso said her goal is to bring residents’ concerns to City Hall and advocate for practical solutions that can improve quality of life across the ward.
