Russia Says Nearly 900 Ukrainian Drones Downed as Moscow Region Fuel Depot Burns

Russia says its air defenses intercepted and destroyed nearly 900 Ukrainian drones overnight in one of the largest aerial attacks reported against Russian territory since the war began.

The Russian Defense Ministry said Tuesday that hundreds of drones were intercepted across several regions, including the Moscow region, occupied Crimea and areas around the Sea of Azov. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said more than 650 drones had been directed toward Moscow and the surrounding region.

Russian officials said most of the drones were destroyed before reaching their intended targets. Moscow Region Governor Andrei Vorobyov reported that two people were killed and nine others injured in the attacks. Several homes and other structures were also damaged, according to regional authorities.

The assault also reportedly caused a major fire at the Volodarskaya linear production and dispatch station, a major fuel storage and distribution facility in the Moscow region. Reports of the fire have emerged from Russian and Ukrainian sources, although the facility’s involvement in the attack has not been independently confirmed.

The facility is considered an important part of the Moscow region’s fuel infrastructure, with petroleum-product pipelines connecting it to major parts of the region and airports around the Russian capital.

The reported attack comes as Ukraine increasingly targets Russia’s oil and fuel infrastructure in an effort to weaken Moscow’s ability to finance and supply its war effort. Kyiv has claimed that its long-range strikes have disrupted a significant portion of Russia’s oil-refining capacity, although those claims have not been independently verified.

The escalation is part of a broader pattern of long-range attacks by both sides. While Ukraine has targeted Russian energy and military-related facilities, Russia continues to launch large-scale missile and drone attacks against Ukrainian cities and critical infrastructure.

The latest strikes highlight how the war is increasingly extending beyond the front lines, with energy facilities, transportation networks and other strategic infrastructure becoming key targets.

As both countries expand their long-range capabilities, the attacks are raising fresh concerns about civilian safety, energy security and the wider economic consequences of the continuing Russia-Ukraine war.
