House Democrats are preparing an expansive oversight and investigative agenda targeting President Donald Trump, his administration and members of his family if they regain control of the House of Representatives in the November midterm elections.
The proposed agenda would involve several House committees and could include investigations, subpoenas, hearings and other congressional oversight measures. Democratic leaders have also said that impeachment remains an option, although they have not committed to making it the central focus of their plans.
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries has said Democrats have not ruled impeachment in or out, emphasizing that any action should be guided by facts, existing law and the U.S. Constitution.
If Democrats secure the House majority, gaining control of key committees would give them greater authority to conduct investigations and issue subpoenas. Their stated areas of interest include alleged corruption, the administration’s use of federal power, government policies and the business activities of Trump’s family and associates.
Democrats have also discussed investigating members of Trump’s Cabinet and other senior administration officials. However, some party leaders have cautioned that impeachment proceedings could distract from broader oversight efforts and should be considered only when supported by sufficient evidence.
The issue has already produced disagreements within the Democratic Party. Earlier in September, the House voted to table an impeachment resolution introduced by Rep. Al Green, with Democratic leadership arguing that the investigative groundwork needed to justify impeachment had not been established.
Trump has previously criticized the possibility of another impeachment effort, calling such a move unfair. He has also rejected allegations of conflicts of interest involving his administration and family.
The Democratic strategy therefore appears to extend beyond impeachment alone. Party lawmakers are preparing to use congressional oversight to examine the administration’s decisions, policies and potential conflicts if they gain control of the House.
The November elections will determine whether Democrats obtain the committee leadership and subpoena authority necessary to pursue the investigations they have outlined. Until then, impeachment remains a possibility rather than a confirmed course of action.
