At least seven people have been killed in a fresh exchange of Russian and Ukrainian strikes, as both sides intensify their use of missiles and drones far beyond the front lines.
Russian attacks killed four people across Ukraine on Saturday, according to Ukrainian officials, with casualties reported in Zaporizhzhia and Sumy. Two women were killed after becoming trapped beneath the rubble of a destroyed home in Zaporizhzhia, while a separate Russian attack in Sumy killed two others.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Russian forces had carried out numerous strikes on residential areas in Kyiv and Zaporizhzhia, as well as in the Odesa, Sumy and Kharkiv regions. He called for stronger international measures against Moscow as the aerial campaign continues.
Ukraine has also continued its long-range drone campaign against targets inside Russia. A Ukrainian drone attack in Russia’s Krasnodar region killed three people and wounded two, according to regional officials. The attack reportedly triggered fires at two industrial facilities, with Russian media reporting that an oil refinery was among the sites targeted.
The latest exchange demonstrates the increasingly intense nature of the aerial war between the two countries. Russia has been using cruise and ballistic missiles, glide bombs and jet-powered drones against Ukrainian targets, while Ukraine has expanded drone strikes against Russian oil, industrial and other strategic facilities.
The attacks come as Ukraine continues to face pressure on its air-defense capabilities. Russian forces have increasingly deployed faster, jet-powered drones that operate at higher altitudes, making them more difficult for some mobile air-defense teams to intercept. Reuters reported that these weapons are placing additional strain on Ukraine’s defenses, particularly around Kyiv.
The continuing attacks have also raised concerns about the safety of civilians and the potential for further damage to critical infrastructure. Zelenskyy has urged international partners to strengthen Ukraine’s air defenses and increase pressure on Russia.
Despite repeated diplomatic efforts, there has been no lasting breakthrough toward ending the war. The intensifying exchange of long-range strikes shows that the conflict continues to pose a serious threat to civilians on both sides of the border.
