Canadian food safety officials have issued a recall for PK brand Roasted Lemon N’ Chilli Peanuts sold in Ontario and Quebec because the product may be contaminated with Salmonella.
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) said the recall affects 65-gram packages of the peanuts distributed in the two provinces. The affected product carries UPC 6 28998 00124 5, batch number CN94, and a best-before date of June 20, 2027.
The recall was triggered by test results, according to the CFIA. The agency said there have been no reported illnesses linked to the product at the time of its latest update.
Consumers who have purchased the recalled peanuts are advised not to eat, serve, sell or distribute them. The product should either be discarded or returned to the store where it was purchased.
Salmonella-contaminated food may not look, smell or taste spoiled, meaning consumers cannot reliably identify contamination simply by examining the product.
Salmonella infection can cause symptoms including fever, headache, nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps and diarrhea. While healthy people may experience a short-term illness, young children, older adults, pregnant women and people with weakened immune systems face a higher risk of serious complications.
The CFIA said it is conducting a food safety investigation and verifying that the recalled product is being removed from the marketplace. The agency noted that the investigation could result in additional recalls if other affected products are identified.
Consumers who believe they became sick after eating the recalled peanuts are advised to contact a health-care provider.
The recall serves as a reminder for consumers to check food-safety notices carefully, particularly when products have been distributed across multiple provinces.
